Bugatti is reportedly working on only its third new car since being purchased by VW nearly two decades ago and it’s going down market. The bargain basement Bugatti will be based on a plebian Porsche platform. How gauche.
According to Automobile, which quotes an unnamed source within VW, the car is currently codenamed Atlantic (after the legendary coupe from the ‘60s) and will have enough seats for four.
Reportedly based on the MSB architecture, both the Atlantic and Lamborghini’s Nuova E-spada will be short wheelbase evolutions of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S. The models will also be able to use the Turbo S’s hybrid drivetrain to help with VW’s empire-wide green-push.
Bugatti will have design briefs all its own, though. The brand will reportedly be looking for 60 miles of straight electric power, a charge time of no more than 10 minutes, and zero battery degradation over 1,000 charges.
And since Bugatti won’t have as much development work to do, more time can be spent making the interior sumptuous and refined.
