A Quarter of the Vehicles Sold Through CarMax Had Unresolved Safety Issues, Study Claims

Over 25 percent of the used vehicles sold through eight CarMax locations in the United States had recall defects that were not addressed, according to a recent safety report. The 2017 study, conducted by the Center For Auto Safety, the Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety Foundation and the MASSPIRG Education Fund, noted that vehicles with unresolved safety recalls  had more than doubled since 2015 at the five locations surveyed in both years. That is worthy of a raised eyebrow or two. Questions remain, however. While the review cites numerous locations selling vehicles with what many would consider unacceptable issues, we don’t definitively know if this is indicative of CarMax as a whole. But lets face it, there were 64 million vehicles recalled for safety problems last year — exceeding the total for the previous three years combined. That said, consumers should not be sold vehicles with outstanding recalls without being informed in advance. While CarMax does provide an “AutoC

Atlas’ 6 Year Warranty Now Offered Across VW Lineup

Back when the Volkswagen Atlas was brand new, Volkswagen announced that it would get a very special, best-in-the-industry six-year/72,000 mile warranty. Turns out, VW thought it was a good idea, so they’re introducing it (basically) to the whole lineup. All 2018 Beetle, Beetle Convertible, Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf GTI, Golf R, and Golf SportWagen, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan and Atlas models will come with the People First Warranty. So, basically everything but the e-Golf. “Volkswagen has always been ‘the people’s car,’ and with the People First Warranty, we’re putting our customers first,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “By bringing the right cars, at the right time and making the offer very competitive, we believe we’re in the position to grow in the US market.” Not only will the buyer benefit from the warranty, but so will the subsequent buyer because the warranty is transferable. Regardless of if you’re the first owner or not, the car will be under warr

Spied: New Tiguan R… Or is it an RS Q3?

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] We just got a new batch of spy pictures of a Tiguan testing in Germany and despite the fact that there’s very little in the way of camouflage, this may be one of the Volkswagen Group’s most mysterious test cars. Whereas it usually goes for dazzle camo, VW has this time decided to go with conflicting information. What you see is clearly a Tiguan body, that much is clear, but what isn’t so clear is why there are so many Audi bits attached to it. Those oval tailpipes? Pure Audi Sport. The wheels? Audi. The Ingolstadt license plate is another Audi hallmark. And finally, the engine, we’re told, has the distinct sound of an inline 5. We’ve known that a Tiguan was testing with Audi’s engine since late August when a video emerged of the car testing at the Nurburgring. Back then, we thought it might be because the Tiguan would get that engine, but now the online consensus seems to be that this is an RS Q3 wearing an elaborate disguise. It wouldn’t

Audi Introduces its First Ever Formula E Car

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Audi has pulled the veil from its first-ever Formula E car – the Audi  e-tron  FE04.  The all-electric racecar, presented during a special event held it Neuberg Wednesday night, will be fielded by the factory-backed Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler. In Formula E, which is a spec series, the teams are allowed to develop the powertrain on the car, along with the suspension and software. Audi says it focused on making the motor-generator unit extra efficient in its development process of the FE04 and also used a single-gear transmission for added efficiency. “After nearly 40 years of being successfully active in motorsport on the highest level, Audi now becomes the first German automobile manufacturer to compete in Formula E in order to test and advance the development of new technologies for production,” said Audi board member Peter Mertens. “Following quattro, TFSI, TDI, hybrid drive and many other innovations, our first single-seater race c

The 2017 Lamborghini Huracan RWD Spyder Summed Up in 6 Real Questions People Asked

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Funny things happen when you drive a Lamborghini for the first time. Everything you do becomes a dramatic affair and this is even more true with a convertible Lamborghini. If you ever wanted to know what it feels like to be someone famous, driving a Lamborghini droptop might give you proper insight into the instant celebrity experience. Here’s what my first Lamborghini experience was like, summed up in real questions people asked me while I was driving it. “What was the biggest surprise?” The biggest surprise isn’t how fast or loud the Huracan is. Everybody knows Lamborghinis are fast and loud — that’s obvious. This is a car with a 5.2-liter V10 with 580 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque that send power to the rear wheels via a snappy seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, so calling it fast and loud would be an understatement. The sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes just 3.6 seconds. The biggest surprise was two-fold: how stable and confident

This is the New Lamborghini Race Car for Rich Guys to Crash

Lamborghini’s one-make race series just got a little bit faster with the introduction of the revised new Huracan Super Trofeo Evo. The majority of changes with the Super Trofeo Evo relate to its bodywork and aerodynamics. The Italian automaker has changed everything except the flat floor, the  front splitter  and the rear diffuser. The most apparent alteration is the F1-style rear fin mounted on the  engine cover , which helps with stability in high-speed corners. It’s joined by a roof scoop for additional  engine  cooling along with flatter and sharper rear quarter panels, a redesigned front bumper and a larger rear wing with a flatter surface. These changes have had a considerable impact on aerodynamic efficiency, Lambo says, with an 8% improvement in forward motion resistance. There’s other small changes, too. All tin-top touring cars must now be fitted with a roof escape hatch for easy exit in the event of a crash or fire, which the Super Trofeo Evo has. A new  exhaust  system wi

Porsche 911 GT2 RS Sets Scary Quick Nurburgring Lap

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has broken the production car lap record at the Nurburgring, with Porsche test driver Lars Kern turning in a dizzyingly quick lap of 6:47.3.  Porsche didn’t just break the Nurburgring lap record – they absolutely crushed it. The LamborghiniHuracan Performante lapped the ‘Ring in 6:52.01 earlier this year, a lap that looked so quick some thought it was fake, and the GT2 RS beat it by almost 5 seconds. The lap was also nearly 10 seconds quicker than the 6:57.00 lap the near-900 horsepower Porsche 918 Spyder and a full 17.7 seconds quicker than the 7:05 benchmark Porsche set for itself before heading to the ‘Ring with its latest GT2. What’s even more impressive is the GT2 RS beat the Huracan Performante’s lap record on the first attempt. Kern and Porsche factory driver Nick Tandy each broke the 6:52 mark on their first attempt and put in five more laps that were all under 6:52. Kern, who races in the VLN Endurance championship and knows the Nurburgring well, set

Find of the Day: Your Fast, Found

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] With the launch of the MKV GTI, Volkswagen urged buyers to “ make friends with their Fast ” as part of the marketing campaign for the all-new model. The campaign was a hit. Buyers and fans clamored for their own Fast figurines, and 17,000 were made. One sold on eBay for close to $800. While the Fast campaign may not have resonated with everyone, it spoke directly to the core GTI enthusiast: young adult males. Now you can make friends with your own Fast. This 2007 GTI is plenty fast. With its low miles, nice modifications, and an agreeable price, it may be the perfect buy for the right buyer. Outside, the black on black car looks, well, just like a Fast figurine. The tinted tails, tinted windows, and debadged hatch give it a quite sinister appearance. The coilover suspension gives the car a hunkered-down and performance-ready look. And the 19″ wheels with GTI centercaps are quite nice. Inside, this Autobahn trim level car features heated le

Audi Offers Weight Savings with RS4 and RS5 Carbon Editions

If you ask an engineer how to make a car better, you’re likely to hear one word: weight. Shedding pounds improves nearly every performance metric, from acceleration to cornering speed to stopping distance and even onto fuel economy. Making a car lighter, as a rule, makes it better. That’s why Audi’s new Carbon Editions are so exciting. Announced for the UK, the packages come with a range of unique weight-saving measures. Up high, the roof, the mirrors, and the spoiler have all been fashioned out of carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Down low, Audi has given owners the chance to buy one-piece milled 20” alloy wheels. These are unique to the Carbon Edition, and alone save nearly 20 lbs of unsprung weight. With these and a handful of other weight saving measures, Audi has managed to cut about 132 lbs from the RS5 and about 176 lbs from the RS4 Avant. Other changes include a matte aluminum finish on the radiator grille and the window surrounds. The RS Matrix LED headlights, a Quattro spo

California Also Wants to Ban the Sale of Combustion Engine Cars

Officials in California are considering banning the sale of internal combustion engine cars as China and countries in Europe look to do the same. California Governor Jerry Brown has expressed interest in banning the sale of internal combustion vehicles in communications with California Air Recources Board chairman Mary Nichols. The United Kingdom, France and China have all moved to ban the sale of pollution-creating cars by a certain time, and Brown thinks there’s no reason why California can’t do the same. “I’ve gotten messages from the governor asking, ‘Why haven’t we done something already?’” Nichols told Bloomberg in a recent interview. “The governor has certainly indicated an interest in why China can do this and not California.” California is a state that loves its cars. According to data obtained by Bloomberg, more than 2 million passenger vehicles were registered in California last year, making it a larger market for auto sales than France and Italy. If the state were to b

Here’s Your Chance to be on The Grand Tour

You have the chance to attend filming for an episode of The Grand Tour – but you will have to be in the U.K. Unlike last season when  The Grand Tour ‘s tent traveled around the world, this year’s studio tent will reside in one spot. “Given the show’s presenters sore joints, struggling lungs and combined age of 158, the studio tent has been given a new home in a charming location in the Cotswold, UK,” said Amazon in a press release. So if you’re interested in joining the studio audience, the company is allowing people to apply to be on the guest list for one week, starting today. We’ve seen plenty of headlines for the second season of  The Grand Tour , including Richard Hammond’s Rimac Concept One crash in Switzerland. The upcoming season will see the trio traveling across five continents, making stops in Croatia, Mozambique, Dubai, Spain, Switzerland, Colorado, New York, and more. Applicants for tickets must be 18 years or over and there are a limited number of spots available. Appl

Porsche Design Penned This Sixteen Million Dollar Yacht

Studio F.A Porsche, formerly known as Porsche Design Studio, has put its stamp on Dynamiq’s latest superyacht.   The Monegasque company was the first shipyard to reach out to the pens at Porsche for help designing one of their superyachts, the GTT 115, and the design is unabashedly Porsche. “Taking the spirit of high-performance sportscar styling to the high seas, the Dynamiq GTT 115 is designed to appeal to car lovers and forward-thinking yacht owners who appreciate the advantages of speed, style and our philosophy of intelligent performance,” said Roland Heiler, CEO of Studio F. A. Porsche. Dynamiq says the exterior was created with exclusive Porsche DNA, featuring elements “targa-style mullions” which were inspired by the Mission E, while the yacht will be offered with Porsche paint options Carrera White , Rhodium Silver, Chalk, and Monte Carlo Blue, among others. Deck cushions and interior upholstery will feature the same houndstooth pattern found in the Porsche 911 R. Contin

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS May Have Set a Blistering Nurburgring Lap

Porsche may have set a new lap at the Nurburgring, with the automaker saying it has some news to share this week.  The manufacturer posted an image today of the 991 GT2 RS going through the Karussell at the infamous Nurburgring with the caption “Here we go again. Look out for the story behind this image on coming Wednesday.” The internet was rife with speculation last week that the giant-slaying GT2 may lap cracked the 7:50 barrier around the 12.9-mile west German racetrack, and the post has only fanned the flames. Porsche has already said the car would be “no seven at the Nurburgring,” at tourists have already clocked the test car making its rounds in the high six-minute area. Porsche factory driver Mark Webber also said it’s capable of doing 208 mph at the track – faster than the Porsche 918 went during its visit to the aptly named Green Hell. The 911 GT2 RS will have to dethrone the Lamborghini Huracan Performante if it wants to be the new production car king of the ‘Ring. The V1

Audi is Doing a Live Video AMA with Adam Scott and Elizabeth Banks

One of the best things to emerge from Reddit is the humble AMA. A direct link between celebrities (among others) and their audience, the format allows everyone to ask their burning questions. Audi, clearly, is a fan, because the company has set up a first-of-its-kind video AMA from the cockpit of a TT RS. The hot Audi will be driven around Willow Springs, during which time, Adam Scott ( Parks and Rec ) and Elizabeth Banks ( Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp ) will answer questions live from Reddit. The AMA will be hosted live on Reddit and YouTube, with Scott taking to the track first at 11 am and Banks following him at 2 pm. Both celebrities will be joined by host Selema Masekela, who you might know from VICE World of Sports or from his time as a host at the X Games. Just how the questions will be read isn’t quite clear, but if there’s a lot of reading going on from the cockpit of a car running around a racetrack, the results are bound to be nauseous. The Nyanborghini Purracan is for Sale

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Famous record producer and Madonna feuder, Deadmau5 is selling one of his cars. Anyone who’s familiar with his car collection will no doubt be excited. Not satisfied with the boring greys and silvers offered on the vast majority of modern cars, Deadmau5 chose to wrap his car in a colorful and punny combination of blue and Pop-Tart cat. Dubbed the Nyanborghini Purracan, the car has a rich backstory. Deadmau5 originally had a Purrari, but the fuddy-duddies at Ferrari USA weren’t on board with his custom badges. Lamborghini, meanwhile, has a sense of humor. The car is advertised on motionendeavours.com , which it turns out isn’t super on board with the Nyan cat, either, because they’re eager to remind potential buyers that the “vehicle is currently wrapped, can be removed.” But what kind of monster would kill the Nyanborghini? It also comes with black 20” ADV1 SL series wheels, but if that’s not your thing, you can have the originals instead

Watch: Carving Canyons in a 500 HP Eos

Let’s be honest, the Eos is one of Volkswagen’s more… forgettable cars. But that’s exactly why it’s such a perfect car to modify: it isn’t hard to improve. Although it isn’t hard, Vancouver’s HPA predictably worked hard on improving it all the same. With a pair of turbos, the 4Motion system from a Passat, and a worked-on dual clutch transmission, the Eos goes from questionable to unquestionably cool. And if that’s not enough, you can carve a canyon with the roof down and soak in the sun. Turns out more power really is the solution to every problem. Volkswagen Applies for “I.D. Streetmate” Trademark

The I.D. nameplate is gaining a new member now that Volkswagen has applied for the “I.D. STREETMATE” trademark. Volkswagen’s application reveals little about the actual product that the name will be attached to—it could be anything from a quantity indicator to a contact lens or any form of motor vehicle not on rails—but the name does suggest that it will be part of VW’s electric push. Having tasked itself with turning its diesel sales into electric sales by 2025, VW is looking to have as many electric vehicles on the road by 2025 as possible. So far we know of the I.D. hatchback, the I.D. Crozz crossover, and the I.D. Buzz. We know, though, that more are on their way. A leaked document showed an I.D. sedan and an SUV are also in the works, though in that document they were referred to as the AEROe and the Lounge. Comments made by a VW representative, meanwhile, suggest that another sedan might be on its way, too. All of these, it seems, are expected to go on sale before 2022. It m

Lamborghini is Just Getting Started with its Hardcore Models

The Lamborghini Huracan Performante is just the beginning. As the Italian exotic automaker’s motorsport division continues to grow, you can expect more track-focused roadgoing models in the future. Recently, Lamborghini unveiled its new Huracan Super Trofeo Evo race car, showing off the latest in aerodynamics. Speaking at the car’s reveal, head of research and development Maurizio Reggiani told  Autocar  some of the lessons learned during the development of the Super Trofeo Evo will directly impact the brand’s street cars. In developing the newest race car, Lamborghini worked closely with racing firm Dallara and its in-house design department, Centro Stile, on the car’s aerodynamics. “The result of the Super Trofeo Evo is we have learned how to do a car with marvelous aerodynamics without any compromise in design or style,” said Reggiani. The collaboration between Dallara and Centro Stile has also encouraged Lamborghini’s racing team, Squadra Corse, to work closer with the company’s

Report: Next RS7 Will Make Up to 700 HP

The recent round of Porsche/Audi partnership is bearing all kinds of fruit. The latest is a 700 hp RS7, the result of the same hybrid powertrain from the Panamera Turbo S E-hybrid. The report comes from England’s EVO , who spoke with Audi’s head of design, Marc Lichte. Lichte told the publication that next RS7 will get two drivetrain options: the 700 hp hybrid or a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 making 650 hp. The V8 will also do duty in the Panamera Turbo, the Bentley Continental GT, and the new Cayenne. Producing 650 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque for the RS7, the V8 will be mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission. The hybrid, meanwhile, also starts with a 4.0-liter V8, but it’s attached to an electric motor that producing something in the neighborhood of 150 hp. In the Panamera, the engine and the motor combine to produce 680 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque. That’s good enough for 0-60 springs of 3.2 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of just 11.5 seconds, while also returning a combined 55 MP

Ratty Rescue: MKIV BOGOlf

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Two for the price of one! Today’s Ratty Rescue: a damaged MKIV GTI that comes with its own donor car. Looking for your latest project? This buy-one-get-one-free MKIV rescue might be just the deal for you. The main attraction here is the 2005 1.8T GTI. For the most part, it appears to be in very good condition. Well, it looks good from the driver’s side. Walk around the car and you easily see the damage a wild tire can inflict on a defenseless hatchback. The rear quarter panel took the brunt of the impact, and the rear passenger window is no longer present. Despite its sad state, you can still drive the car home: no mechanical bits were affected. The seller states the GTI has a leather interior and sunroof. It’s a manual transmission car. Unfortunately, there’s no other information in the ad. Contact the seller for additional details. The second car appears to be a standard Golf. The rear quarter panel and window are ready to be surgically

Volkswagen is Already Testing a Hotter Version of its Compact Crossover

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Volkswagen has been testing a hot version of tis T-Ro crossover – but it won’t be heading to North America. The Volkswagen T-Roc made its public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, and for now, the stylish compact crossover isn’t bound for North America. But that won’t stop us from keeping a close eye on what Volkswagen is working on, just in case the German automaker changes its mind. The standard T-Roc hasn’t even arrived dealerships in Europe yet, and already Volkswagen is testing a hotter R variant. Spy photographers caught this prototype close to Volkswagen’s test facility at the Nurburgring. Since the Volkswagen T-Roc is based on the Golf, it’s little surprise there’s a T-Roc R in the works. Expect the hotter crossover to have the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood with around 310 horsepower. For now, there aren’t very many changes to the exterior of the vehicle to differentiate it from a standard mod

Find of the Day: 2003/20/2000/10000/18000 GTI

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] There’s a whole bunch o’ numbers with this week’s Find of the Day. Let’s crunch some digits, shall we? 2003: The model year for this MKIV GTI 20: As in 20th Anniversary Edition 2,000: This car is #2000 out of 4,000 made for the United States 10,000: This GTI has only 10,000 original miles 18,000: More on this number at the bottom of this article (but you’ve probably figured it out) Amazing, right? This 14-year-old car has fewer miles than most cars sold last year. Unreal. And as with any car with ridiculously low miles, this one’s immaculate. The Imola Yellow paint is completely blemish-free, the interior looks no different than the day it left the dealer lot, and the engine could double as a plate for your next meal. If ever you’ve searched for the perfect 20th, this has to be it. The seller had some work done on the car in the last 1,000 miles: timing belt and tensioner, water pump, key filters, key fluids, and much more. The ad sta

Audi Orchestra Pays Tribute to Past Emmy Winners

Whether or not you caught last weekend’s Emmy Awards, you may want to catch Audi USA’s latest ads that pay tribute to winners from the past. The ads feature an R8, a TT RS, and a Q5 on baritone performing some of TV history’s favorite themes. This ad shows the three playing 1977’s outstanding comedy winner, the Mary Tyler Moore Show. The ads prove that it’s not just the ridiculously high revving F1 cars that can perform songs, but more quotidian Audis, too—sort of, the sound (gasp) has been autotuned, but if Reba McEntire can do it, so can Audi. Together with an orchestra of traditional human-powered string instruments, the song comes together in a surprisingly pleasant way. The themes to Cheers and Star Trek are also performed, all with a remarkable fidelity. Watch all three. Gallery: The Swiss Alps Taken Over by Lambos

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Lamborghini has hosted its very own Concours d’Elegance. Held in Neuchâtel, Switzerland this past weekend, the Lamborghini Concours d’Elegance gathered some of the rarest exotics ever created by the Italian automaker. One of the highlights of the show for many was seeing the Marzal in person, a concept car that first debuted at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show. There were plenty of classic Miuras, Countachs, and Espadas joined by more obscure Lamborghini models like the Jarama, Jalpa, 350, 400GT , and the massive LM002. The company’s current models were also present of course, including the Veneno Roadster and a number of Aventadors. The Italian automaker said the event was dedicated to Le Corbusier, a Swiss-French architect who is considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture. The Lamborghini Concours d’Elegance was organized through the company’s Polo Storico and like other Concours events, there was an awards ceremony that included the

In Conversation with Sascha Oliver Neumann of Volkswagen Classic

VW Vortex was lucky enough to be invited to Coming Home 2017  last weekend, a celebration of the GTI in which owners of the hot hatch par excellence were invited to Wolfsburg to hang out under the shadow of the factory whence they sprang fully formed, though not always finally formed, into the world. While there, we had the chance to speak Sascha Oliver Neumann, the Volkswagen Classic department’s spokesperson, about how he got there, what it’s like to work there, and the hurdles the brand face trying to preserve its history. Before working where he does now, Neumann was first employed by Volkswagen’s events department. There, he helped set up celebrations and shows, some of which were of the classic variety. Specifically, he worked alongside the classics department on historical rallies and at Techno Classica in Essen, an annual celebration of old metal that rivals any of the world’s great shows for the sheer volume and variety of cars represented. He must have done well, because tw
