Report: Volkswagen to Establish Budget Brand in China

According to a piece published by Bild , Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has announced that the Volkswagen Group will bring a ‘budget’ car to market, as it is seen as a key component of future success for the company.  The model will be first available in China at a price point less than 10,000EUR, and eventually will become available throughout the Asian market.  Depending on success, the model may eventually become available in other select countries as well. Winterkorn says that the upcoming budget car has been in development for quite some time, because the model will need to retain the quality and comfort that Volkswagen has become known for.  As the car will be built in China, we expect to see an all-new subcompact model as opposed to the heritage models that are available in certain markets. Event Report: Cult Classic 10

Over the past ten years, Nothing Leaves Stock’s Cult Classic has grown significantly due to the laid-back atmosphere that can at times make it feel more like a gathering than a traditional show.  But don’t mistake this casual feel for a lack of planning or hard work, as it takes a lot of care to appear this effortless.  Take a much closer look, and you’ll discover the no-nonsense security team comprised of DCI members, and judges who’ve got Performance VW features and countless high-level builds under their belts. This year’s edition happened just hours after a monsoon-like storm, complete with widespread flood warnings, made the usual field uninhabitable.  Thanks to quick thinking on the part of organizers, this year’s edition was moved to higher ground on the other side of Memorial Park.  This allowed cars and attendees alike to stay much drier than they otherwise would, and kept the park’s grounds from becoming a muddy grave for lowered vehicles. Even with the lack of cooperatio

TDI-Powered Car Traverses US on Single Tank of Fuel

After averaging an extremely impressive 66mpg, the Neste/CLP Motorsports team has crossed the United States in just a single tank of Neste NEXTBL renewable diesel fuel. The team traveled a total of 2,507 miles at an average of 68mph across the American south, getting a bit of help from Tanner Foust on the final day.  The journey took the team just over 37 hours to complete which, while not setting any time records, certainly is quite impressive considering that their vehicle consumed just 37.6 gallons of NEXTBL fuel. Read the full Press Release below. Santa Monica, California  —   Neste, the world largest producer of renewable diesel, CLP Motorsports and multiple time X-Games and Rallycross champion  Tanner Foust  made history on  June 26th , when CLP Motorsports’ Superlite Coupe crossed the finish line in  Santa Monica, California , after driving across the  USA  on one tank of NEXBTL renewable diesel. Project Golf SportWagen- Intro

I’ve never really been one for SUVs and crossovers.  The current offerings aren’t the body-on-frame, go-anywhere specialty tools I remember from my youth, and what they lack in capability, they also lack in on-road performance. The current crop isn’t terribly good at handling or being efficient, which in my opinion are major components of our ideal driving experience.  So when it comes to space or utility, I usually look for something of the wagon variety- and it seems that I’m not alone. We hit quite a few shows around the east coast each summer, and we see modified Jetta SportWagens at nearly every event. Even amongst common consumers, these cars are highly sought-after. They don’t depreciate much, making even early Mk 5 2.5 versions expensive in comparison to other Jettas or Golfs of the same vintage. This year, Volkswagen launched their latest SportWagen, which is now billed as a Golf.  In many ways, this latest SportWagen is the best yet and it has certainly won the attention of

Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Volkswagen Completes Successful Renewable Fuel Evaluation with Solazyme and Amyris

Two-year trial evaluated the effects of renewable diesel solutions with existing and next-generation TDI® Clean Diesel applications Belmont, Calif. – Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced the successful completion of its Renewable Diesel Evaluation Program in collaboration with Solazyme, Inc. (Nasdaq:SZYM) and Amyris, Inc. (Nasdaq:AMRS), two of the world’s leaders in renewable fuels and products. Beginning in 2012, Volkswagen measured the environmental impacts from the use of pre-commercial renewable diesel formulas with TDI® Clean Diesel technology found in the 2012 Passat TDI (which uses a NOx storage system) and 2012 Jetta TDI (SCR system). Initial analysis found that advanced renewable fuels in the test offered comparable performance to standard crude-based diesel fuel blends while producing less CO2 emissions on average. During the two-year evaluation, Solazyme’s, now commercial, Soladiesel RD® (100-percent algae-derived renewable diesel fuel) and the Amyris plant-sugar de
