Volkswagen’s Wanderjahr Development Program Marks 500th Participant

42 Group locations in 18 countries participate Program for career entrants started in 2006 Since 2006, Volkswagen has already assigned 500 young employees to a “Wanderjahr” (Year Abroad). The program allows young people who have completed their apprenticeship to gain international experience by spending 12 months with a Group company in another country. The 500th participant is Laura Lange from the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. She started her Year Abroad with Autoeuropa in Portugal in October. The Head of Human Resources of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, Martin Rosik, says: “Volkswagen offers its employees attractive development possibilities. Video: Volkswagen Teases Concept Ahead of CES 2016

With anticipation building for this year’s CES, Volkswagen has published a 10-second clip to their YouTube channel which proves to be both informative and extremely frustrating.  Uploaded to tease their concept car for the event, quick cut-style cinematography is the name of the game here. From the little bit that we can see, the concept looks to have a van shape, confirming earlier reports that the car would be much like the Bulli concept originally shown in 2011.  Aside from that, we anticipate that the vehicle will be a pure electric hybrid with an impressive amount of connected features, expanding on what we’ve already seen. We’ll know for sure in just a few day’s time, when Volkswagen reveals the concept on January 5th. Find of the Day: The Fast and Furious Jetta

Heading to Race Wars?  Barrett-Jackson might just have the perfect car for you.  Originally cast as one of the star cars in the first Fast and Furious film (owned by Jesse’s dad who was locked up in County, as I’m sure you all remember), this Mk3 Jetta was modified in the trends of the day, with a body kit from Wings West, seats and steering wheel from Sparco, and even a PlayStation 2.  After filming wrapped, this one was purchased by Frankie Muniz, and does not appear to have been modified- well, you know , aside from what’d already been done. But this particular lot is more interesting than most, for more reasons than you’d think.  Sure, the car might not have aged all that well, but it is still very much a part of what has become one of the biggest movie franchises of all time.  Couple that with celebrity ownership, and this Jetta might just surprise all of us when it crosses the auction block in Scottsdale. Find of the Day: 1984 Callaway Stage II GTI

The individual who sent this Find of the Day over said it was a “once in a lifetime car”, and we’d have to agree.  With just under 21,000 miles on the odometer since new, and full engine rebuild coming just 300 miles ago, this GTI could be the nicest Callaway Stage II car around. As the car has largely been gone through and updated, we’ll let the seller do the talking.  A full transcript of the eBay Motors listing can be found below. A true time capsule! 20,930 documented miles! A complete and very rare Callaway Stage II Turbo GTI!  This car has been thoroughly gone through and needs nothing. History: Car was purchased new on January 11, 1984 at 36 miles. 2nd owner purchased the car on April 15, 1985 at 11,588 miles and installed the Callaway Stage II Turbo Kit. He kept the car for 28 years. I purchased the car from the second owner on June 15, 2013 at 20,699 miles. I then went completely through the car with no expense spared. Rewind: First Beetle Rolls off Assembly Line 70 Years Ago

The start of mass production of the Volkswagen Saloon shortly after Christmas 1945 marked a new era of civilian vehicle manufacturing It was shortly after the first post-war Christmas 1945 that the first of the Volkswagen Type 1 – the model which, as the Beetle, would subsequently be sold more than 21 million times – rolled off the production line. By the end of 1945 only 55 vehicles had been produced in total however. The start of mass production was a highly improvised undertaking, and material shortages hampered operations over the subsequent months. Yet the early vehicles were visible symbols of hope; a new beginning for the car plant under British control. By the end of the Second World War in 1945, just 630 of the People’s Car known as the ‘KdF-Wagen’ had been built. The state-of-the-art factory in what was to become the present-day Wolfsburg, built specially to make the vehicle, was integrated into Germany’s wartime armaments industry, producing mainly military goods. Report: Volkswagen to Drop “Das Auto” Slogan

According to a report published recently by Reuters, Volkswagen plans on slowly phasing out the “Das Auto” slogan, and replacing it with simply “Volkswagen.”  Said to be yet another step in distancing themselves from the Winterkorn-era of management, this shift in messaging will be “rolled out in stages across the world.” Hardly the time for sentimentality, Volkswagen made the change after consulting management as well as PR industry experts, some of whom felt that the slogan did not convey the brand’s technological focus, and might be construed as a bit “pretentious.”  While we’re not quite sure if the new “Volkswagen” slogan will be the fix the brand is after, it certainly won’t hurt.  No word on whether the brand will also rebrand their “Das Auto” magazine, but it certainly would make sense. APR Teases “500hp+” EFR Turbo Kit for MQB Platform

APR has been telling us that their highly anticipated big turbo kit for MQB platform vehicles would be one of the most impressive they’ve ever done for quite some time.  Recently, the firm made their kit Facebook official, showing an image of the forthcoming system which will go on sale early next year.  And while the kit looks to be quite impressive, it’s APR’s claimed numbers that really have our attention. With the new kit, APR says that owners of MQB platform cars with 2.0T power can expect to see somewhere upwards of 500hp after installing the turbocharger and supporting mods.  It’s an impressive feat to say the least, achieving numbers that Volkswagen owners frankly didn’t think possible from relatively few changes.  And as with all APR kits, it should retain proper street manners as well.  We can’t wait to get our hands on one.
