Project SportWagen: Setting the Stage(s) with AWE Tuning

With suspension from Air Lift Performance, wheels from Rotiform, and roof candy courtesy of Volkswagen Accessories, you might just say that Project SportWagen is starting to look the part of a proper show car within today’s Volkswagen scene, while retaining the ability to be driven daily.  But although the looks are very much in-line with what we see at Waterfest and H20 International, sadly the performance is not.  Not to knock the extremely capable and surprisingly efficient 1.8 TSI, but it isn’t the kind of motor that is going to set anyone’s hair on fire when it comes to outright acceleration.  Fortunately, we’ve got an extremely vast aftermarket industry which caters to just that sort of thing. Founded back in 1991, Philadelphia-based AWE Tuning has been churning out high quality performance products for Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche (along with new additions BMW, McLaren and even Bentley) for quite some time.  In fact, if loud pipes really do save lives, then they’ve probably ke

Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started. Transalpine Run Across the Alps on foot: Mikkelsen competing in 2015 Transalpine Run Andreas Mikkelsen (N) has opted for a unique form of preparation for the Rally Australia (10 to 13 September). The Volkswagen driver is currently taking part in the 2015 Transalpine-Run, at which he is contesting three of the total eight stages.  On Saturday, the route led 34.6 kilometres from Oberstdorf (D) to Lech (A), with the 330 teams from 33 countries climbing 2083 metres in the process. Sunday’s second stage took the competitors 24.7 kilometres from Lech to St. Anton (A) and featured a difference in altitude of 1083 metres. On Saturday, Mikkelsen finished ninth out of

Project SportWagen TDI: Wheels and Tires

Let’s be clear, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient of definitions: the Mk7 can fit an absurdly huge wheel without rubbing. This is smart packaging on Volkswagen’s part, as right off the showroom floor, we were able to bolt up a set of 20” by 9” wheels left over from our Turbo Beetle Convertible project. It was a just a why-the-hell-not joke, and if you follow us on Instagram, you can see how cartoonish it looked. But not only did the “wagon wheels” not rub on bumps, we could crank the wheel over to hard lock and they wouldn’t even graze the fender liners. The other part of the equation? Wheel gap. Gargantuan wheel gap. Wheel gap that, using the standard unit of measure that our parents used back in the day, is big enough to park another Volkswagen into. We took the car out for a shakedown cruise with the twenty-inchers and – between the 1.5” larger diameter wheel/tire combo and stone stock suspension – found the rear bumper of a Ford Escape parked in the next space over sat

IAA 2015: Volkswagen Updates Euro-Market Golf Cabriolet

Golf Cabriolet for model year 2016 has sportier exterior, new colours and an upgraded interior The Golf Cabriolet is one of the most successful open-top cars on the German market and one of the most popular of its kind in Europe. At the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA), Volkswagen is presenting a visually extensive update of the four-seater soft-top best seller. The changes are easy to identify by the considerably sportier front bumper, the striking side sills and sporty accents on the rear bumper. Moreover, the convertible can now be configured even more individually. Besides six new exterior colours, there is an additional soft-top colour and six new wheel designs. In the interior, there is a new generation of steering wheels and new trim elements as well as new designs for the cloth and leather seats. The range of engines in the Golf Cabriolet was also uprated to model year 2016 and switched to the Euro 6 emissions standard. The four petrol (TSI) and two diesel engine

Find of the Day: 1980 Volkswagen Golf

When it comes to building show cars, the Europeans are quite simply on a different level.  Posted recently to the ‘Burn the Mk1s’ group on Facebook, this Golf is a prime example of the level that some go to when assembling their perfect Mk1.  And that’s why it’s our Find of the Day.   This particular Golf received a full restoration just 6,000km ago, during which nearly everything was powder coated, zinc coated or chromed just as you’d expect.  To give the car a much needed boost in performance, a 159hp 2 Liter 16 valve engine was fitted,  as was H&R coilovers, Eibach sway bars and H&R camber plates.  Wires were tucked as well, as not to detract from the metal and paint work lurking under hood. The same amount of care has been taken with the interior as well, with reupholstered Recaro seats, a leather-covered dash, and new gauges installed.  Keeping the OEM look, a Scirocco steering wheel and retro MP3 stereo system with hidden speakers were installed.  It’s the perfect bl

ECS Tuning MK7 Angled Vent Pod & Boost Gauge Kit

ECS Tuning has done it again! The buzz of excitement is in the air with their new in-house designed MK7 Electronic Boost Gauge and Vent Pod Kit! Never before has beauty and function reached this level. With factory-matched features and flawless performance, this new Boost Gauge and Vent Pod Kit will integrate seamlessly into your dash and shift your MK7 driving experience into high gear! The Vent Pod fits precisely in the left side dash vent and is angled toward the driver so you’ll have perfect visibility from the entire range of driver’s seating positions. Airflow remains intact as well as the factory vent open-and-close functionality. The Vent Pod integrates an injection molded mounting plate to secure the Electronic Boost Gauge into position, eliminating any possibility of gauge rotation. The ECS engineers focused on every little detail in their design, even down to the factory-matched texture and color. The Electronic Boost Gauge is a 52mm electronically-actuated gauge which d

Choice Gear: All Safety- No Dance

What will come as absolutely no surprise to anyone, our mk2 restoration has resulted in a car that’s beautiful, period-correct, nearly-original in terms of mechanical reliability, and yet still not in the top 1,000 list of ideal road trip vehicles. With our annual 2,000-mile fall road trip to H2o looming, we turned to the Volkswagen Accessories catalog for what vintage car owners will agree are must-have options. Because we upgraded our stopping power with larger rotors & calipers, the factory original wheels—and, therefore, the factory spare tire—will no longer clear the brakes. And since an extra custom-built BBS RS isn’t in the budget, we decided that the VW Accessory Air Compressor (combined with an off-the-shelf tire plug kit) is by far the best option to have in case the GTI gets a flat on the road. About 6” x 5” x 2” in size, it sits just fine at the bottom of our the now-superfluous spare tire well.   Next to the Air Compressor (it turns out that removing a 13” OE spar

Carbon Works Berlin Creates a Carbon Fiber Gas Tank for Mk1 Golf

Ahh carbon fiber, you’re everywhere these days, aren’t you?  A full-blown tailoring industry has been molded around, well, molding , and the products it pumps out are limited only by imagination and budget.  Take the latest exercise from Carbon Works Berlin, a fuel tank done completely in carbon fiber. Now, we think it’s a safe assumption that this tank does weigh a bit less than a standard metal one, but does it really matter?  The reality is that this is a beautiful piece, that can’t even be seen unless you’re under the vehicle or have parked on a mirror.  In that, it’s the kind of thing that separates first from second at places like Wörthersee, where touches like this make all the difference. If you’re interested in more carbon fiber goodies from Carbon Works Berlin, check out their Facebook page, here . New Škoda Superb GreenLine Goes More Than 1,100 Miles on a Single Tank

The ultra-efficient capabilities of TDI-powered Volkswagen Group vehicles is certainly nothing new, but the sheer amount of models in which the group employs this technology is nothing short of remarkable.  With the new Škoda Superb Greenline, the group’s 1.6 TDI is capable of achieving an incredible 76.4mpg, while emitting just 96g/km of CO2 emissions- allowing the car to travel 1100 miles between trips to the pump.  To help make the car even more efficient, a unique aerodynamic package and 15mm lower ride height lowers the GreenLine’s drag coefficient, and low rolling resistance rubber works with longer gear ratios to ensure that little effort is wasted.  The car will debut next month in Frankfurt, and go on sale later this year. Find of the Day: 1987 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V

Around these parts, most anything with a 16-valve Volkswagen engine is looked upon quite fondly.  Examples that are in near-perfect condition really make our ears perk up, and this 1987 Scirocco certainly has done just that.  Without question, this Scirocco deserves to be our Find of the Day. Traveling a verified 66,500mi since new, this Tornado Red 5-speed example is extremely clean, with no known rust and zero leaks.  Originally living int he northwestern United States, the car has had just three owners since new, and has never been in an accident.  Like all things that have a bit of age though, the Scirocco did pick up a few blemishes over the years, including some worn exterior gaskets, a missing front 16V emblem, and a slight rip in the driver’s side seat bolster. The Scirocco is currently available on eBay Motors for a Buy-It-Now price of $6,500, which seems like a bit of a deal for a car which is almost certain to appreciate.  To see the full for sale ad with additional imag

034Motorsport Presents New Line of Billet Aluminum Dogbone Mount Inserts for Audi & Volkswagen

034Motorsport is proud to announce the availability of a new line of  Billet Aluminum Dogbone Mount Inserts for Audi & Volkswagen  vehicles, including the 8J/8p/8V Audi TT/A3/S3 (MQB) and MkV/MkVI/MkVII Volkswagen Golf/Jetta/GTI/GLI/R32! These precision-machined inserts are designed to fill voids in the factory dogbone mount, and limit fore-aft movement of the engine and transmission under load, which in turn improves shift quality and power delivery. 034Motorsport’s engineering team went through numerous revisions of each mount insert to find the optimum profile for minimizing drivetrain slop without introducing excessive noise, vibration, or harshness into the cabin. As a result, 034Motorsport Dogbone Mount Inserts for Audi & Volkswagen don’t place substantial preload on the factory dogbone mount, and allow for just enough movement to minimize NVH transfer while significantly limiting the unwanted movement of the torque arm. These inserts were designed to be easy to insta

WRC 2: Win at Rally Germany Makes it Three in a Row for Skoda

Škoda Motorsport has continued their streak with an overall victory at Rally Germany, making it three in a row for the brand-new Fabia R5.  Making the victory just a bit more special, pilot Jan Kopecký drove the Fabia R5 to its first ever victory on asphalt, leading the WRC2 pack by more than four minutes at the rally’s end. In July, the Group handed 792,100 (July 2014: 822,200; -3.7 percent) vehicles over to customers. “The overall economic situations in China, Russia and Brazil continue to be tense. At the beginning of the second half of the year, the Volkswagen Group was not entirely immune from these developments. To a certain extent, we did experience a tailwind in North America and especially in Europe,” Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler said in Wolfsburg on Tuesday. “In the second half of the year, we expect the patchy development of markets to remain a key factor in the various regions,” Klingler added. On the overall European market, Group brands delivered 2.45 (2.37; +3.7 percent) million vehicles from

HPA’s Jetta GLI’s Find The Podium For The Second Time In Two Events

Langley, BC CANADA – As the Pirelli World Challenge series was about to enter the mid point of the season this past June, the HPA Jetta GLI’s found their stride. Road America showcased the potential for the pair of FWD entries with Jeff Altenburg in Car No.15 challenging on all three races for P1 and bringing home HPA’s first win of the season, meanwhile Alex Welch in Car No.16 rounded out the top five. While in the lead in Race 3 at Road America, late session tire troubles cost Car 15 a potential second podium of the weekend but left the HPA team feeling optimistic. Entering the second half of the season with a win under the team’s belt, spirits in the HPA paddock were high. Mid Ohio Sport Car Course is not known to favor front wheel drive entries and this event left little more than an hour between test sessions for the team to dial in the cars so it was a “run what you brung” scenario. Both cars were strong right off the hauler, competing for P1 through P5 in official practice
