Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Across the Alps on foot: Mikkelsen competing in 2015 Transalpine Run

Andreas Mikkelsen (N) has opted for a unique form of preparation for the Rally Australia (10 to 13 September). The Volkswagen driver is currently taking part in the 2015 Transalpine-Run, at which he is contesting three of the total eight stages.  On Saturday, the route led 34.6 kilometres from Oberstdorf (D) to Lech (A), with the 330 teams from 33 countries climbing 2083 metres in the process. Sunday’s second stage took the competitors 24.7 kilometres from Lech to St. Anton (A) and featured a difference in altitude of 1083 metres. On Saturday, Mikkelsen finished ninth out of the 15 guest starters before coming home 30th out of 35 competitors in this class on Sunday. “Respect to the participants who do this all the time,” said the 26 year-old Mikkelsen, who was joined on the run by his Norwegian friend Anders Bidne. “That was really tiring, particularly in temperatures above 30 degrees! At the same time, however, it was also good preparation for the Rally Australia.” Mikkelsen faces a further 39.6 kilometres on his third and final stage from St. Anton to Landeck (A) on Monday. The remaining five stages of the Transalpine Run head towards the finish in Sulden (I), where the race ends next Saturday.

Victory for Rowe and Shorter as van der Linde extends his overall lead

Daniel Rowe made his mark on the sixth race weekend of the Engen Volkswagen Cup South Africa. The South African won one race and finished an impressive second behind compatriot Chris Shorter in the other at the Dezzi Raceway, to the south of Port Shepstone (ZA). In the meantime, Sheldon van der Linde (ZA) managed to extend his lead at the top of the overall standings. The 16-year-old secured pole position in qualifying, before finishing third in race one and second in race two. Van der Linde now leads the championship with 297 points, followed by Mathew Hodges (ZA/264) and Rowe (258). The next two races in the Engen Volkswagen Cup South Africa will take place in Killarney (ZA) on 24 October.

Kruger wins both races at the Sachsenring

Jeffrey Kruger dominated proceedings as the Sachsenring (D) hosted the Volkswagen Golf Cup Poland. The South African won both races at the challenging, winding circuit to claim wins number four and five of the season and extend his overall lead in the championship. The fact that he led from start of finish in both races only served to make his achievement all the more impressive. Kruger came home about 5.6 seconds clear of Dylan Pereira (L) and Markus Fluch (S/+7.1 seconds) in the opening race, before finishing ahead of Andre Gies (D/+1.5 seconds) and Michał Gadomski (PL/+2 seconds) in race two. The next races in the Volkswagen Golf Cup Poland take place in Brno (CZ) from 18 to 20 September.

Team Socardenne wins in Zolder

Team Socardenne won the sixth round of the Volkswagen Fun Cup Belgium in Zolder (B). At the end of the three-hour race, the team with the number 280 car came home first, 31.5 seconds clear of Allure Team 1. Third place went to Allure Team 2, who trailed the winners by 1:01 minutes. The endurance race was dominated by many incidents and some sensational battles. The cars at the head of the field were taking no prisoners: Socardenne was embroiled in a thrilling battle with the two Allure teams for vast stretches of the race, before eventually emerging triumphant. The next race weekend of the Volkswagen Fun Cup Belgium takes place in Anneau du Rhin (F) on 3 and 4 October.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
