- Classic Rally from 13th to 15th August, 628 km on Saschen Dream Roads
- Three stages through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and the Czech Republic
- Volkswagen Classic sends 14 classics to cult event
The 13th edition of the Sachsen Classic again promises to be a home game for Volkswagen. Zwickau and Dresden are not only production sites for Golf, Passat and Phaeton, but from 13 to 15 August, will serve as the start and finish of the iconic Oldtime Rally. Volkswagen Classic will bring eight air-cooled and six water-cooled classics, as well as representatives from the newest generation.
Long supported by Volkswagen, the Sachsen Classic has become a much sought-after cult rally, because the number of applicants far exceeds the number of available places. For 2015 the organizer has succeeded again, sending 70 years of automotive history in the form of a very diverse Rolling Museum in Sachsen’s dream roads. Carefully planned routes and a festival atmosphere are the recipe for success of the tour – providing a level of genuine enthusiasm in Europe that is typically only found at the legendary Mille Miglia in Italy.
During the three day event, the 628 km long route is peppered with 15 time controls and 20 special stages. Start of the rally is traditionally by 12 clock in Zwickau, at the headquarters of Volkswagen Saschen as it has been for 25 years. Here the Golf, Golf Variant, Passat and Passat Variant are produced.
The first stage on Thursday is “Sachsenring”, more than 125 kilometers to the “Steep wall” in Meerane, and around the castle and Ponitz Wolkenburg. On Friday the 273 kilometer stage “Erzgebirge” takes competitors through Olbernhau, Schloss Purschenstein, Altenburg and Glashütte, leading to Dresdner Augustus Bridge. The over 230 km third stage “Transparent Factory” on Saturday sends the vehicle convoy on Bad Schandau and the Czech Krasna Lipa in the Oberlausitz before the Volkswagen Transparent Factory, and return to Dresden.
180 teams are present, including 14 from Volkswagen Classic. Immediately recognizable are the Beetle and Karmann Ghia that illustrate the earlier history of Volkswagen. From the Volkswagen Osnabrück collection come a VW Porsche 914 and Porsche 356. Several early Golf, Passat and Polos round out the model years from 1973. Although these models already represent the younger era of Volkswagen, they still have vintage status, with the Polo celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
A special rarity is the Panama Brown golf L. In 1978, it was delivered to the former East Germany and distributed there for East German marks. 10,000 of these vehicles would be exported for East German buyers, bringing about a feeling of German unity.
