Find of the Day: 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro Camper

There are so many objectively better bug-out apocalypse vehicles that you could buy for the seller’s six-figure asking price, but at the moment we really couldn’t care less.  The result of an insane amount of time, effort, and money, this Syncro Camper is much more than what meets the eye, featuring a 255hp 1.8T, beefy Porsche 930 axles, and a completely custom interior.

Finished in white with matching white fiberglass and contrasting black nearly everywhere else, the Camper certainly looks to be a highly capable example, with a winch mounted up front and jack attached to the roof.  Houndstooth seating surfaces work well as a heritage play, as does the full kitchen, but an aftermarket sound system makes the van feel very modern.  It seems that the methodology used when building this truck was one of great conflict, but apart from a few bits looking out of place, it came out quite nicely.

Now as we mentioned earlier, the Syncro does have a six-figure price tag- $109,870 to be exact.  Could you replicate one for that much?  Probably not.  But that puts this into a too-valuable-to-use category that in our opinion takes away from the experience.  Unless you can afford to scratch up a six figure truck.  If that’s the case, then by all means- go wild.

More 3.0-Liter TDI Settlement Details Expected by January 31

Volkswagen and the TDI Plaintiff’s Steering Committee were in court today for another status conference following the agreement in principal reached earlier this week. Little new information was given at the conference held before Judge Charles Breyer today, but the court ordered the parties to develop a formal settlement agreement, class action notices, and a class notice plan by January 31, 2017. For now, though, owners still don’t know how much to expect in compensation. Elizabeth Cabraser, lead Counsel for the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee reaffirmed in a statement today that the compensation would be “substantial.” The potential cost to Volkswagen is widely reported to exceed $1 billion, though, with an additional $225 million going into an environmental trust to help offset excess emissions.
