It’s that time of year again, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ratings are revealed through countless press releases from manufacturers, ensuring consumers that their product is indeed safe. But for most of us, the words “Top Safety Pick +” are simply words on a page, with no real meaning aside from that it sounds impressive. Mercifully, the IIHS uploads their tests to one of the most entertaining YouTube channels going for anyone with a valid internet connection to see just what exactly a “good” rating looks like.
If one crash test could be considered a crowd favorite, it’d without a doubt be the small overlap. In the clip above, Volkswagen’s new Passat goes head to head with a wall (literally), absorbing as much of the impact as possible to ensure the test subject remains safe. It’s not pretty to watch, but in real world conditions, it’s good enough to save a life.
