Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

50 years of Formula Vee racing in Europe

Half a century: Formula Vee anniversary at the Norisring

Formula Vee returned to the Norisring 50 years after the series’ first official race was held there. The Historische Formel Vau Europa (HFVE) fan club celebrated the anniversary by staging show races featuring more than 50 vehicles at the 2.3-kilometre street circuit in Nuremberg. Despite heavy rain on Saturday, the event was attended by motorsport legends such as Porsche’s ex-sports director Manfred Jahnke, the former Formula 1 driver Dieter Quester (A) and retired pro Leopold Prinz von Bayern (D). The celebrations also attracted leading lights from the early years of Formula Vee and amateur racing drivers. Other guests included Kurt “Master” Bergmann (A), who dominated Formula Vee for years with his Kaimann team and supported subsequent Formula 1 World Champions like Niki Lauda (A) and Keke Rosberg (FIN). The series features a small single-seater powered by Volkswagen. What makes this car so special is that crucial parts – such as the engine, gearbox and wheel suspension system – are based on the VW Käfer. The first Formula Vee race in Europe was held at the Norisring on 4 July 1965. Although the Formula Vee era came to an end in 1982, races are still held with the famous, much-loved single-seaters. The charity Historische Formel Vau Europa e.V. preserves the history and technology of Formula Vee – the biggest junior racing series of all time – and keeps its legacy alive.

Wins for Giovinazzi and Leclerc at the Norisring

The sixth weekend of racing in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the Norisring finished with a win for Antonio Giovinazzi (I, Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) – and quadruple success for Volkswagen. George Russell (GB, Carlin) came second, followed by Alexander Albon (T, Signature) and Charles Leclerc (MC, Van Amersfoort Racing) in third and fourth places. The second race was won by Maximilian Günther (D, Dallara/Mercedes) ahead of Albon and Leclerc. Giovinazzi crossed the line 22nd following a collision. Leclerc was fastest in the first race in Nuremberg on Saturday morning, which took place in heavy rain. It was the rookie’s fourth win this season. This enabled Leclerc to further extend his top-of-the-table lead in Europe’s most important junior racing series. He is now first in the overall standings with 269.5 points – 42.5 ahead of Giovinazzi (227). Russell is fifth with 120 points and Albon (110) is seventh. Races 19, 20 and 21 will be held in Zandvoort (NL) between 10 and 12 July.

Arshanskiy wins the “White Nights 2015”

Yuriy Arshanskiy (RUS) beat off the competition on the third weekend of the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia. The driver from Saint Petersburg won the “White Nights 2015” rally in Karelia after completing twelve Special Stages spanning a total of 139.34 kilometres. Yuriy Uryukov (RUS) finished second, while Artur Muradyan (RUS) and Denis Rostilov (RUS) came third and fourth respectively. That was the full extent of the rankings because only four of the eight entrants managed to complete the gravel event from Lakhdenpokhya to Sortavala. The next rally, “Rostov 2015”, will be held near the Russian city of Yaroslavl on 18 and 19 July.

Project SportWagen: Going Stage 2 with APR

When we last left you, the humble little SportWagen was fresh from the development process with our friends at AWE Tuning, sporting a new downpipe, exhaust and intake, allowing things to breathe a bit easier.  The car sounded great, but there was no getting around the fact that our wagon was still quite, well, slow.   While we realize that nothing we do to the Golf SportWagen at this point will make it a race car, we still felt compelled to do something .  To put it bluntly, we had a fever, and the only cure was more power. Flash forward a few hours, and we found ourselves at Waterfest, staring down APR’s palatial spread and the numerous tuned vehicles surrounding it.  Earlier in the year, APR had hinted to us that their 1.8 TSI files would be quite impressive, and based on what they were able to do with the 2.0 TSI found in the new GTI and our time in their Golf R, we knew it’d be worth the wait.  So with this in mind, we lined our G...

Volkswagen’s Gone to California with Grand California Camper

Volkswagen is bringing the California XXL concept to production. It will debut at the Dusseldorf Caravan Salon as the Grand California. It’s set to be based on the medium wheelbase Crafter van. That’s the company’s full-size commercial van, larger than the T6 Transporter based California. The high roof means room for adults to stand up, though it won’t get the concept’s extended length. The Grand California offers a full wet bathroom. It’s not exactly spacious, though, measuring in at around 31.5 x 33-inches. A toilet, shower, and sink are all crammed into that space, but at least there are motion sensor lights to stop you from reaching for a switch. Standard, the Grand California it comes with berths for two adults. Space for two children is optional, but they’ll be stuck in a berth amove the driver’s area. The kitchen offers a sink, stove, and two fridges. The front seats swivel to add seating space when the RV is parked. It’s also got solar panels, an integrated satellite dish,...
