Scott Speed and Tanner Foust score valuable points to begin their pursuit of the 2015 Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship
Herndon, VA — During last weekend’s season opener in Ft. Lauderdale, the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team demonstrated that the Beetle GRC cars will be a truly competitive proposition in 2015. Drivers Scott Speed and Tanner Foust kicked off the weekend by posting the two best times in Saturday’s qualifying round, showing the latent speed of the 2015 Beetles GRCs.
Scott Speed, driver of the No. 41 SHARK WEEK Volkswagen Beetle GRC, continued on to win both his heat races, followed by a second place finish in his semifinal. Starting the final from the inside second row, Speed launched his way up to a second place finish behind race winner, Ken Block.
“We learned last year that you can’t just win a bunch of races, but you have to finish a bunch of races,” said Speed. “We were able to take a tough situation and turn it into some points. Hopefully we can carry that momentum into the next races and bump it up one step on the podium.”
After a fault in the start of Heat 1B, Tanner Foust spent the rest of the weekend battling to get back to the front on a track that was narrow and difficult to pass. The driver of the No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Volkswagen Beetle GRC finished fifth, after starting seventh in the final.
“I wouldn’t normally be very happy about a fifth place finish, but the takeaway from this weekend is pretty strong,” said Foust. “Qualifying first and second with the Beetle against unknown competitors from the high echelons of American motorsport shows how capable our Volkswagen Andretti team is this year.”
Next weekend, the team heads to Austin, TX, for a non-scoring, invitational race at the Summer X Games. The event takes place on June 5 and 6. ABC will air the race on Saturday, June 6 between 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. EST.
