The list of Volkswagens with a 5 Star safety rating has grown by one, as the National Highway Safety Administration has given the Atlas the rating.
Not only has it gotten NHTSA’s highest star-based rating, but when equipped with Front Assist, it becomes an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick.
The Atlas joins the 2017 Beetle, 2018 Golf, Alltrack, GTI, R, SportWagen, Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Passat as 5-Star rated vehicles.
The NHTSA tests crash cars from their side, front, and roof to determine the safety of a car. Points are also awarded by the IIHS for active safety features, like Front Assist, which warns you if you come up on a vehicle too quickly. For instance, if the car in front of you stops short, the driver is warned. Front Assist comes as standard on the Atlas SEL, SEL Premium trims and on the SE when it’s equipped with the Technology package.
“The Volkswagen Atlas is designed for the modern American family,” said Hendrik Muth, Senior VP, Product Marketing and Strategy. “There’s nothing more important than keeping your family safe and the Atlas is engineered to help do that with excellent structural integrity and numerous available safety and driver assistance features.”
