Find of the Day: Jazzy GTI

When Volkswagen introduced the fourth generation GTI, they were truly at a crossroads in North America. Their sales had dipped frighteningly low in the early 90s; the minuscule volume had the execs pondering removing them from the market entirely. With a renewed model line up later that decade, they came roaring back and found new fans with their sporty and entry-level luxury models. The Mk4 GTI, in particular, won over a new generation of enthusiasts who covet these cars to this day.

This 2003 Volkswagen GTI is one of the most sought-after models of that generation: a 20th Anniversary Edition in snazzy Jazz Blue. The individually numbered models are highly desirable by Mk4 enthusiasts. They feature a number of enhancements over standard GTIs including a standard 6-speed transmission, upgraded wheels, painted body kit, red badging, and Recaro seats. Auto journalists praised the 20AE GTI’s handling improvements from the larger wheels and summer performance rubber, as well the refined ride and near-luxury interior trim.

This particular car has been well loved by its seller. The time and money invested is noticeable with one glance. To start, the car is riding on handsome 19″ Rial Daytona wheels. The GTI sits nicely over the large rims courtesy of a full air ride suspension. The Jazz Blue paint looks fresh from the factory. Clear turn signals replace the standard amber ones. There’s even a nice set of OEM rails on the roof ready to hold the next owner’s toys.

Inside though, is almost an entirely different car. The owner has dumped a number of things: the OEM front seats, the rear bench seat entirely, the original steering wheel, and whole mess of other things. Up front, the owner has installed Sparco seats, a Nardi steering wheel, and a wood shift knob. In back, the rear seat was replaced by the guts for the air ride system, a rear strut brace, and slick roll cage.

The seller has listed a few more updates; a new headliner, a new-ish water pump and timing belt, and a handful of other things. With 136,000 miles, this GTI should have plenty of life left in her.
