The nice thing about a range of cars sharing a platform is that the smallest cars have access to all of the biggest cars’ toys. Case in point, Volkswagen is reportedly examining the possibility of a 300 hp Polo R.
Far from being an engineering pipe dream, a Polo R would actually be pretty easy. The car already has the same 2.0-liter engine as the Golf R, it would just need to be tuned properly. And because both are on the same MQB platform, the Polo could pretty easily use VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. Even cooling wouldn’t be an issue, according to Ralf Kölling, VW’s director of small car lines.
“There is enough room for all the extra cooling in the Polo, for sure,” Kölling told the UK’s Autocar. Right now the only problem is the Golf.
With the added power, weight, and cost, a Polo R would compete with Golfs, which would be problematic.
Still, though, Volkswagen apparently isn’t so opposed to the idea that they’re unwilling to try it. According to Autocar, prototypes of high output Polos have already been built for evaluation purposes, though no decisions have been made on such a car’s market viability.
Even though we wouldn’t get one here, we’d love to see this. The combination of Golf R power and Polo size would put a Polo R right in the performance sweet spot.
Currently, Polo lovers can get their performance yayas from the Polo GTI that sends 192 hp to the front wheels.
