Two Golf GTI Clubsports S have been spotted testing at the Nurburgring ahead of an anticipated reveal at Wörthersee Treffen, reports Motor1.
Based on what is already the most power front-wheel-drive Golf on the market, the Clubsport, the S is anticipated to do away with unessed version’s overboost function, and stuff those ten extra horses under the hood permanently.
That would give the car 290 hp and an expected 258 lb/ft of torque, the same as the SEAT Leon CUPRA 290. All in, it would make the three-door hot hatch only 10 hp less powerful than the Golf R.
It is also speculated that the Clubsport S will get a tweaked exhaust system, also from the SEAT, to give the car an exhaust note better suited to its performance figures. Rumors were also bouncing around about a lightweight variant of the Clubsport, and it’s anticipated that this is the car that has gone on the crash diet.
Despite all of the S’s power, the regular ol’ Clubsport’s place in the range is likely safe. The S is expected to be an addition, rather than a replacement.
