The historic Donington Park is about to play host to round two of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and Team BKR’s Aron Smith goes into the weekend as the number one driver for an independent team.
Smith took his Passat CC to the podium in the second race of round one, at Brands Hatch. His strong results in the weekend’s other two races gave him 50 points, and a four point lead over second place Adam Morgan.
Smith’s result is a surprise since Team BKR only announced that they would be racing in the championship two weeks before the season’s start. Moreover, the grid is the largest it’s ever been, with 32 cars lining up at the lights.
Smith, though, is familiar with the car, which he raced for Team BMR last year. More good news for VW fans is that the Irishman tends to perform well at Donington, where he got pole position last year.
Qualifying on the 1.98 mile track starts tomorrow, and the first of three races starts on Sunday morning.
