Engineering Explained has just released the latest in its series of “Five Things You Should Never Do” videos. This time, the YouTube channel is covering suspension mods that could hurt performance more than they help.
The five mods covered are lowering clamps, lowering springs, wheel spacers, camber kits, and sway bars.
Host Jason Fenske goes through a number of good reason to avoid these mods, which are mostly cheap corner cuts. The suspension clamps in particular are singled for abuse. Apart from just looking sketchy, they interfere with the springs and they lower the car without increasing the spring rate, making you more likely to bottom out.
But corner cutting isn’t the only thing that will get you into trouble. Just because you can fit a bigger, stiffer sway bar onto your car, argues Fenske, doesn’t mean you should.
Not all of his comments are universal, though. When talking about camber kits he explains that too much camber can worsen performance. Fair enough. He goes one step farther, though, claiming too much negative camber looks bad. A matter of opinion, if ever there was one.
Ultimately, the video is a good reminder of why you should educate yourself, say on a forum, before pouring money into your car.
