They call it a race taxi, but clearly it should be called the race bus. This Porsche powered Type 1 is just another example of the amazing things that can be achieved with a little know-how and a lot of power.
Watching a Type 1 pass a Ferrari F355 is weirdly gratifying and as it turns out, this was all for a surprisingly great cause.
The Type 1 was at Monza for an event called 6 Ruote di Speranza (6 Wheels of Hope) at which people with disabilities were given rides around the track in supercars.
Sure, there were faster cars on the circuit, but few could take as many people around the circuit for a ride as the race bus.
The creator, Fred Bernhard from Switzerland, started his project with a T3, widened it 21 cm (8 inches), and put a split window body on it. The engine is a 3.6-liter twin turbo unit from the back of a Porsche 993 Turbo that’s been tuned to make 530 hp and nearly 560 lb-ft of torque.
