Despite dominating Red Bull’s Global Rallycross Series Volkswagen’s rallycross efforts across the pond were considerably harder fought.
With the likes of former WRC legends like Sebastien Loeb and Petter Solberg in some of Europe’s best small hatches, the competition was always going to be tough.
And, indeed, the race for second place came down to the last race of the last rallycross of the season, but Johan Kristoffersson eventually finished the FIA World Rallycross season with the second most points of any driver.
Although he had no chance of reaching drivers’ champion Mattias Ekstrom—who took an Audi S1 fielded by a team that he owned—second place in Sunday’s final race meant that Kristoffersson finished the season with 240 points, just one point ahead of third place Andreas Bakkerud in his Ford Focus RS.
Before the race, Kristoffersson was clear that getting second place wasn’t his dream. “No,” he said when asked on the grid. The dream is “P1, baby.”
Despite his insistence, though, his emotional celebration after the race belied how hard the fight had been to get to second place in a season full of breakdowns and bad luck.
