Back in September rumors first arose of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles selling vehicles in the US and now there’s more. Automotive News reports that an insider has been spilling beans about a US-bound Crafter.
“No decision has been made, but the option is being analyzed,” a source told Automotive News.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles sales have been increasing steadily, and with the Group’s investment in Navistar, the Crafter would have access to a sales network.
The problem, though, says the source, is the chicken tax—a 25 percent import tax on light trucks. “Whether a [complete knockdown] assembly or full production is the most sensible depends on the volume,” the source said.
With an 800 million Euro investment in a Polish plant capable of producing 100,000 vehicles annually, though, it would appear that VW is getting ready to sell many more vans.
