With the presidential election drawing near, Volkswagen’s CEO, Matthias Muller has said that settling the criminal investigation related to the manufacturer’s emission scandal, before the January 20 presidential hand over would be ideal.
“Of course we’d wish to have a final decision before the American government—and with it, the authorities—change, so that we can have certainty,” said Muller today during a press conference in Hamburg.
Although VW has had its $15 billion 2.0-liter TDI settlement approved by US courts, the matter of the 3.0-liter TDIs has yet to be settled. That said, after a court hearing held this morning in San Francisco things are looking good.
Automotive News reports that US district Judge Charles Brayer said that talks between VW and the the US Justice Department have made a lot of progress. Judge Brayer added that he is “very optimistic” that an agreement will be reached. A report on the case is due on December 1.
All this, of course, is leading to reform at VW, which has already pledged itself to become a leader in electric vehicles. More may be needed to keep up with the expense of the emissions scandal, as now there are reports that VW will be holding a special meeting of the board on Friday to discuss overhauling the company.
