Volkswagen is continuing its countdown to the updated Golf with the Mk5. Not often considered the prettiest Golf, the design was a departure from the previous generations.
Vans were all the rage in the early oughts, as VW designer Klaus Bischoff explains, so the design was intended to offer as much space for passengers as possible.
That led to a shortened nose, and aerodynamics led to a wedgy shape. Although the appeal of the appearance wasn’t immediately apparent to everyone, Golf design has been evolutionary ever since. The handsome Mk6 and sharp Mk7 both owe their good looks to the Mk5.
