15 years of R from Volkswagen means lots of horsepower and lots sales. The company has just delivered the 200,000th R, and it’s going to the right enthusiast.
The 200,000th R is a 2018 Golf R sold in the UK. It’s a Performance Pack model and it’s wearing an Akrapovič exhaust system. That means 19-inch wheels, bigger brakes, a rear spoiler, and no top speed limiter. The removed limit and rear wing let it hit 165 mph flat out. Jost Capito, Executive Director of R delivered the car at Robinson VW in Peterborough at the end of last week.
The car was delivered to Keith Williamson, a long-time VW customer who already has an MkV Golf R32 and an MkVI GTI in his garage.
VW started the R with the 2002 Golf R32. Since then there have been the Passat R36, Touareg R50, Scirocco R, and the Golf R. The R department started out as Volkswagen Individual and got a name change to R for Racing in 2011.
“Developing and globally retailing 200,000 units in 15 years is a big achievement,” said Capito. “Volkswagen R is a small business that employs around 350 colleagues. Everyone in our company contributes to the success of the company. My personal thank you goes out to everyone in the team, but also in the Retailer network, who should take pride in this milestone.”
