Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Crushes Nürburgring Lap Record with 6:44.97 Time

Porsche’s stint as king of the Nürburgring is up. Lamborghini has set a new production-car lap record at the famed German circuit.

With a lap time of 6:44.97, the forthcoming Lamborghini Aventador SVJ claimed the record title. The time is over 2 seconds quicker than Porsche’s former record of 6:47.3 set in the 911 GT2 RS. And Lamborghini managed the record with a naturally aspirated V-12 engine at that. On hand to verify the record was independent firm Remak via GPS certification using VBOX-Racelogic instrumentation.

Lamborghini driver Marco Mapelli, who also set the Huracán Performante’s lap time of 6:57, piloted the supercar to its record time, and aside from Mapelli’s driving skills, much of the credit for the car’s banner performance can be given to Pirelli. The Italian firm worked closely with the tire manufacturer to fine-tune the car’s Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires. The rubber will also be an option for the Aventador SVJ when it launches later this year.

The other piece to the record-lap puzzle is Lamborghini’s Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA) active aerodynamics system. The system works to adjust airflow through and around the car for peak downforce and drag to ensure the car slips through corners and powers through straights. Additionally, Lamborghini re-engineered the SVJ’s all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-steering system for improved on-track performance.

The company hasn’t spilled official specifications yet, but claimed the car offers the best handling and power-to-weight ratio. We now know the said ratio is one horsepower for every 4.36 pounds of weight, per Lamborghini’s Thursday announcement.

Look for the Aventador SVJ to make a formal debut during Monterey Car Week, which runs August 18-26.

Project SportWagen: Going Stage 2 with APR

Audi Teases A7 Details with New Video

Audi’s gearing up to unveil the latest iteration of the A7, and to get you excited they’ve released this teaser video focusing on the details. The lights, the lines, the interior are all teased here, and though on its own the video doesn’t give us a strong sense of what the whole car will look like, with all of the other details we’ve seen so far we now have a pretty good sense of what’s coming. As you might expect, the updated A7 will look broadly similar to the outgoing A7, but will differ in the details. Based on what we’ve seen, the changes look good. As was reported yesterday, we’re expecting a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo, a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, and an RS7 that could reportedly make up to 700 hp thanks to the Porsche Panamera’s hybrid drivetrain.
