One of the most interesting and difficult parts about VW’s Wolfsburg plant is that it was in use during WWII. The company observes that memory by leaving some shrapnel holes in the I-beams that hold the factory up, but sometimes there are more dangerous reminders.
This weekend crews found another such reminder in the form of a bomb. The discovery caused the evacuation of everyone within a one kilometer radius–or about 4,000 people.
Fortunately, the bomb was defused and no one was hurt, but it did mean that the railway line and canal that feed VW’s Wolfsburg factory had to be closed temporarily.
German authorities have gotten pretty good defusing these bombs since their discovery is not at all uncommon.
In fact, this latest bomb discovery comes almost exactly two years after 550 lb bomb was discovered in 2016.
As in this case, that bomb was dismantled without incident.
