Porsche Taycan: Over 600 HP and 310 Miles of Range

The Porsche Taycan will enter production in 2019 and the German automaker is hyping up its arrival by dropping some early details on the EV.

The Taycan will produce over 600 hp from two permanently excited synchronous electric motors. This will enable the electric four-door to sprint from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in under 3.5s and from 0-124 mph (200 km/h) in under 12s. The automaker says “a Porsche with electric drive technology is naturally track-ready,” as well, thanks to the PSM motors’ ability to stay cool under heavy load.

As for the battery pack, it will contain four hundred different cells, each with a current of about 4 volts – equating to an 800-volt system. The battery pack’s 270 watt-hours per kilogram rating is on par with some of the densest lithium-ion battery packs on sale today, helping to provid an estimated driving range of about 310 miles. When the battery has depleted, it will take 15 minutes to charge back up to 248 miles (400 km) of range using Porsche’s 800v fast-charger. The vehicle will also be compatible with 400v chargers, although they won’t charge the vehicle at the same rate as an 800v charger.

The automaker also addressed the issue of charging infrastructure in the Taycan’s development. “It’ll take years to build a comprehensive charging network for electric vehicles,” the automaker said in a release, adding that it’s “rolling up its sleeves,” to help expand the EV charging grid. The automaker is installing 800V fast charging stations at its dealerships and other places Taycan owners may frequent, such as golf courses. Porsche has also partnered with Daimler, Ford, VW and BMW on the Ionity charging network, which will see 350 kWh charge points installed every 100-150 km (62-93 miles) along European roadways. Owners will be able to charge their Taycan at home as well using a socket or an inductive charging pad.

The Porsche Taycan will enter production at the automaker’s Zuffenhausen facility, where it hopes to build around 20,000 examples of the electric four-door per year. Some customers have already placed a pre-order for the vehicle, with Porsche saying the initial reaction from customers has been “fantastic.” The production-ready Taycan will likely debut late this year or in early 2019, so stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
