Audi is testing out a new paint process that lets the company spray multiple colors on different surfaces of the car. In one single paint process. It saves resources and adds customization options.
The automaker isn’t saying how it’s done, but that a pilot paint shop in Ingolstadt is testing the overspray-free paintprocess.
In a conventional paint shop, in order to spray the second colour on a car, like a contrast roof, workers would have to mask off the car and then paint the second color separately. With the new process, the paint robot would measure the seam between the roof and side panel. It could then apply the second color in the same process as the first colour, with millimeter accuracy.
The special applicator applies the paint with no overspray and a sharp edge. That saves time and resources in masking, but also saves paint. The EPA says that modern spray guns can lose 30-40 percent of the volume of applied paint from overspray.
The new method would save time and money for Audi, have environmental benefits, and let Audi offer more individualization options. The company expects to put it into series production next year.
