Speaking at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Herbert Diess, chairman of the board at Volkswagen, said that the brand sold more cars in 2017 than it ever had before.
Sales rose 4.2% in 2017 to 6.2 million vehicles, said Diess. More than half of those came from China, where sales rose nearly 6%.
Sales rose in the US, Russia, and Brazil, all of which struggled in 2016. European sales, too, grew but VW’s home market was one of the few countries whose sales shrank by 0.1%.
Despite growing sales in America, and being the world’s biggest automaker, VW is still committed to growing sales further in the US market.
With investments totaling $3.3 billion in North America, $1.2 billion of which will be going to the US, VW is intent on breaking even on operating profits by 2020.
“Together with Golf, Passat, and Beetle, the Jetta is one of our most popular Volkswagens – and the Number One Volkswagen in the U.S. We have re-engineered it 100%, taking it to a new level,” said Diess. “And it is one of the keys to our future success in the United States. By 2020, we will offer at least two new U.S. models annually, covering key segments in the United States.”
