Report: Aventador Replacement May Go Hybrid

Although Lamborghini has so far managed to hold out against the wave of electrification, it may soon have to give in to hybrid technology.

When the Aventador is finally replaced, according to a report from Motor Authority, Lamborghini’s V12 flagship is likely to inherit a degree of electrification.

“With the new Aventador we must decide what will be the future of the super sports car in terms of electric contribution,” Maurizio Reggiani, R&D director, told Motor Authority. “What way to manage the weight coming from electrification, and to be able to guarantee every way to have the DNA of a super sports car.”

Despite being averse to electrification because of the weight it adds, it was never really a question of if the brand would go electric, but rather when. As part of the VW Group, Lamborghini was subject to an order from on high to electrify as much of the range as possible.

In fact, Porsche is developing an all-electric supercar platform that both Audi and Lamborghini are likely to use in the future.

The electric propulsion that the Aventador’s replacement uses will be milder, though, and could range from a “mild-hybrid” 48-volt system to a twin-motor solution like the Porsche 918.

As the flagship, however, the replacement is likely to continue using a V12.

“Yes,” said Reggiani. “About V-12, I say, yes, yes, yes, yes,”

In the meantime, there’s still life left in the Aventador. Somewhat outdone by its little brother’s Nurburgring lap record, Reggiani hinted that it could get aero vectoring like the Huracan Performante.
