Ratty Rescue: Not-Really-Ratty Jetta GLI

Faithful VWVortex readers, we are about one week away from the reveal of the all-new MK7 Jetta. Let’s take a break from scouring the internet for leaked images of this important model, and focus our attention instead on a first generation example. This 1984 Jetta GLI is our latest Ratty Rescue: a rough around the edges Volkswagen in need of a restoration. Truth be told, this MK1 is quite far from “ratty” status.

Volkswagen introduced Americans to the Jetta in 1980. This little sedan helped expand their model lineup rather simply: by grafting a trunk onto their popular hatchback. Just like the Rabbit, the Jetta came from the pen of famed designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Both the hatchback and the sedan were praised for their modern, angular styling, and crisp driving dynamics.

VW upped the ante with their all-new sedan when they introduced the Jetta GLI in 1984. Taking the same formula from the GTI, they dropped in a 90Hp 1.8L motor mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, beefed up the suspension, and added thicker roll bars to make an entry-level sports sedan. The GLI provided buyers with the practicality of four doors but still provided the fun of the GTI.

This GLI is quite the deal: the seller is asking only $1800 for a complete and running car. From the description, it looks like a weekend’s worth of work would net you a very solid runner. First off, the head gasket needs to be replaced. Then it needs brake work. Swap out the suspension and tie rods and you’re just about there. Replace the motor mounts, and have some new tires mounted (the front passenger one looks about shot) and you’ll be able to drive this baby anywhere.

Sort out these mechanical issues, then focus on the cosmetic. Replace the dented trunk lid with the one included by seller. The driver’s rear wheel arch needs some attention. But other than that, the car is in great shape. The seller says there is no rust; one big issue that you won’t have to worry about. The seller says the paint is fair but in photos it looks pretty good. The inside is similar to the outside: a little worn, but complete.

All in all, you’ll spend less time restoring and more time driving this car. And that’s what owning an old car is all about, right? Take a look at the ad in our classifieds to get more info. Contact VWVortex member Werfen for more information. You can see the car in Eugene Oregon and the asking price is $1800.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

More 3.0-Liter TDI Settlement Details Expected by January 31

Volkswagen and the TDI Plaintiff’s Steering Committee were in court today for another status conference following the agreement in principal reached earlier this week. Little new information was given at the conference held before Judge Charles Breyer today, but the court ordered the parties to develop a formal settlement agreement, class action notices, and a class notice plan by January 31, 2017. For now, though, owners still don’t know how much to expect in compensation. Elizabeth Cabraser, lead Counsel for the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee reaffirmed in a statement today that the compensation would be “substantial.” The potential cost to Volkswagen is widely reported to exceed $1 billion, though, with an additional $225 million going into an environmental trust to help offset excess emissions. Buy back offers are still only expected for the oldest 20,000 of the roughly 80,000 VW Group vehicles sold in America with the 3.0-liter TDI engine. Those vehicles are mostly SUVs, like ...
