Ratty Rescue: Jetta Track Rat

One man’s project is another man’s…project. At least that’s the case with this 1992 Volkswagen Jetta GLI. If you’ve ever wanted a dedicated track car on-the-cheap, our latest Ratty Rescue might be just the car for you.

If your first question is “why a Jetta?” you’re not alone. A four-door sedan as a race car? It seems a bit silly, but the answer lies right under the hood. This is not any Jetta, it’s a Jetta GLI. This is no family car. With its twin-cam 16-valve engine, it’s the perfect start to a high-revving racer. This 16V is far from stock. VWVortex member badassmofo (formerly GLX-GLX) has updated the engine with a modified intake and a Megasquirt fuel management system. From his build thread, it looks like there’s also a stainless steel Magnaflow exhaust system.

Updates aren’t just in the motor bay. The interior has been entirely stripped: carpet, headliner, seats, and door cards have all been chucked in the garbage. Check out what’s been added. First off, a full custom roll cage. Second is a genuine Sparco racing seat. And finally, there’s a one-off dash and center console with real VDO gauges. Completely slick.

The exterior of the car looks pretty much stock. There’s a dual-round headlight setup and a set of 15″ alloy wheels, but that’s about it. Most body trim is gone, probably for saving weight. Speaking of mass, the MK2 Jetta is a light car by today’s standard, so all that’s been removed will improve the horsepower/weight ratio.

One not-so-great thing to mention with this car: it’s currently not running. Things were working well, but there may be an issue with fuel delivery. You’ll need to take that up with the seller.

Perhaps the greatest thing about this car: the price. With a ton of money and time invested in this GLI, the $1500 asking price is outrageously low. While that’s a bit too high for a 24 Hours of Lemons entrant, it is a cheap entry into racing.  If you’re interested in this ’92 GLI, you can see it in Tucson Arizona, or check out the ad in our forums.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

More 3.0-Liter TDI Settlement Details Expected by January 31

Volkswagen and the TDI Plaintiff’s Steering Committee were in court today for another status conference following the agreement in principal reached earlier this week. Little new information was given at the conference held before Judge Charles Breyer today, but the court ordered the parties to develop a formal settlement agreement, class action notices, and a class notice plan by January 31, 2017. For now, though, owners still don’t know how much to expect in compensation. Elizabeth Cabraser, lead Counsel for the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee reaffirmed in a statement today that the compensation would be “substantial.” The potential cost to Volkswagen is widely reported to exceed $1 billion, though, with an additional $225 million going into an environmental trust to help offset excess emissions. Buy back offers are still only expected for the oldest 20,000 of the roughly 80,000 VW Group vehicles sold in America with the 3.0-liter TDI engine. Those vehicles are mostly SUVs, like ...
