For the first time ever, an RS5 will be sold in Sportback trim. The quad-doored RS5 was unveiled last night at the Classic Car Club of Manhattan ahead of the New York International Auto Show.
The Sportback will use the same 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 that powers the RS5 coupe. Making 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, the engine will propel the car to 60 in fewer than four seconds and all the way up to a German-limited top speed of 155 mph (or 174 mph if you shell out for the Dynamic plus package.)
As has been Audi Sport’s wont lately, the RS5 Sportback features box-esque flares over the wheel arches as a callback to the 90 quattro IMSA GTO, which was famously kicked out of IMSA for being too good.
[See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com]The arches make the car 15 mm wider than the S5 Sportback, which we liked very much indeed here.
“The Audi RS 5 Sportback is a completely new offer for our customers. Our progressive interpretation of a five-door high-performance coupe has neither a predecessor model nor a direct competitor,” says Michael-Julius Renz, managing director of Audi Sport GmbH. “The Sportback offers the ultimate in functionality with maximum performance.”
Not only did the car debut in New York, it will be sold first in America starting in the fall.
