Find of the Day: Silver Scirocco

It’s Wednesday, so it’s time once again for our Find of the Day. This week we have a sweet silver Scirocco in excellent shape. If you’re in the market for some new metal, this might be just the car.

Volkswagen never quite found the sweet spot with their sporty coupes. Some people classify the Karmann Ghia as a sports coupe, but with an air-cooled engine, there’s zero sport in the little car. The Karmann-built and also Italian-designed MK1 Scirocco looked great, but it also was a sexy body on a sedate platform. The initial MK2 Scirocco was more of the same.

But in 1986 Volkswagen made a substantial update to their sports coupe. They made it, well, sporty. Under the hood is a 1.8-liter, 123 horsepower, twin-cam engine. This rev-happy engine transformed the car from a good looking commuter to a seriously hot car. Scirocco 16V’s came standard with a close-ratio 5-speed manual transmission. To match the new guts, the car also received a generous styling refresh: a bold body kit, a large integrated rear spoiler, “teardrop” alloy wheels, and nicely bolstered front seats.

This 1987 Scirocco 16V takes the performance of the original car and kicks it up a notch. The 1.8L engine has been replaced by a 2.0L 16-valve engine from a later Jetta GLI. Back in its day, this larger engine made 11 more horsepower. While that might not sound like a lot, remember, the Scirocco is quite light so just a few more ponies can go a long way.

We’ll let you review the classified ad yourself for more information. As the seller states, descriptions are “not his thing” so it is a bit tough to decipher. Our take: the car spent some time in storage, the current owner bought the ‘Rocco last October, did some updates (oil, fuel pumps, gear oil, etc.), and he’s owned 17 Sciroccos since 1990. Or something like that.

From the photos, we can see the car is in really great shape. The paint is shiny, there’s only a couple of dings, and the car looks great on “Sebring” wheels from a Corrado. Inside, there’s a MOMO steering wheel, aftermarket shift knob (could be MOMO as well), a custom gauge cluster, and an aftermarket stereo.

The car is located in Bloomington Indiana. The seller is asking a reasonable $4250.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
