The 10 Most Expensive VWs at Barrett-Jackson

Barrett-Jackson just wrapped up its 46th annual Scottsdale auction, which set all kinds of records, including the sale of Kindig-It Design’s 1965 21-Window Deluxe Bus for $302,500 (pictured above and below). Not only did that bus set an auction record, it was the highest priced Volkswagen in Scottsdale that week. While it outdid the next closest VW by quite a margin, it wasn’t the only high priced VW at the show. Here, are the highest priced VWs from the auction:

1. $302,500: 1965 Type II 21-Window Deluxe Bus

Featured on Velocity Channel’s Bitchin’ Rides, this microbus was completely restored by Kindig-it Design and repainted in Mercedes Black and Bentley Magnolia White. With a 1915cc 120 hp flat four out back and a 4-speed transmission, this bus sits on 17″ wheels.

2. $143,000: 1967 21-Window Deluxe Bus

Not sure if you noticed a theme here, but we have another 21-window bus in black and white, but this time the colors are flipped and it has a 2,027 cc engine. Comes with a rare dash clock and was the benefited from a detailed restoration.

3. $39,050: 1979 Super Beetle Convertible

This Super Beetle was purchased new in 1979 alongside number nine in our list. The owner wanted a Beetle, but couldn’t pick between River Blue and Lemon Yellow. So he did what any of us would have done if we could and bought both.

4. $38,500: 1968 Bay-Window Custom Bus

Bought new in Fresno, this customized bay window has only known two owners, one of whom sent it to a shop to have it lowered and painted Burnt Copper and white. With limo-style seating inside and a VW themed surf board, this is the perfect car for pretending you’re in Fresno.

5. $38,500: 1979 Super Beetle Convertible

One of four drop top Super Beetles from the late ’70s on this list, this epilogue edition celebrated the very first convertible Beetle prototype ever produced (in 1938) and so is all black, much like my soul. One of the rarest VWs produced, this example has been restored with careful attention to detail.

6. $36,300: 1964 Beetle Custom Woody Wagon

This woody wagon conversion is certainly… wooden. And also signed by George Barris, the so called King of the Kustomizers.

7. $34,100: 1956 Beetle Sunroof Sedan

This orange and cream oval window was restored well and has a sunroof. A beautiful example of an early Beetle.

8. $33,000: 1969 Custom Pickup

A rare double-cab custom pickup, this VW was finished in a custom woody wrap and was stored in the Gallatin Motors showroom in Bozeman, Montana for the last two years.

9. $32,450: 1979 Super Beetle Convertible

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
