Gallery: The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz

The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz was revealed today at the North American International Auto Show. The concept is the first variation on the I.D., the brand’s all-electric darling due in 2020.

The new model harks back to the original Type 2 microbus (by which logic we should be expecting an all electric Type 3 next) and was described by VW as a living room on wheels.

With seating for up to 8 people, a range of 270 miles (based on US testing), and 275 kW (that’s nearly 370 hp), the van variant of the MEB platform should go as good as it looks.

And it does look good. Although it doesn’t have quite the classic style of the original microbus, the I.D. Buzz nevertheless has a futuristic elegance in real life.

I’ve never really been one for SUVs and crossovers. The current offerings aren’t the body-on-frame, go-anywhere specialty tools I remember from my youth, and what they lack in capability, they also lack in on-road performance.
