Volkswagen’s head of sales and marketing, Jurgen Stackmann, has revealed that an electric GTI could fit into its portfolio in the coming years. Speaking to the UK’s Autocar magazine, Stackmann said “Clearly GTI fits with EVs, though.”
The automaker has been adamant that its electric cars are replacing diesel, not gas-powered cars, so you don’t need to worry about losing the regular GTI, but it does show that despite its “green” ambitions, VW isn’t giving up on performance.
Stackmann admits that the “formula would change,” if an electric GTI came to market, but he says that the brand will offer a “fun, usable and meaningful way of transportation.”
The board member for marketing was also bullish about the I.D. Buzz’s chances of making it to the public, saying that it has more chance than any other Microbus concept. That’s because the lack of a big hunk of steel in front of the driver makes designing a crash structure on a flat-front vehicle easier.
