Autocar is reporting today that Volkswagen is fast-tracking plans to get a new, range topping Up! GTI to market.
The motto of the car, they report, will be “affordable performance,” and it will be priced at around £15,000, while the power is expected to go up to 113bhp and 147 lb-ft of torque.
That may sound humble, but the supermini weighs less than 2200 lbs, so not much is needed to move the Up! along. Further, the figures are eerily similar to those in the original, Mk1 GTI, widely seen as one of the best ever GTIs.
Prototypes of the Up GTI, report Autocar, have a top speed of 124mph and get to 62 in 8 seconds, but that’s kind of beside the point. Rather than fast, the Up needs to be quick, and with heavily tuned McPherson struts up front and torsion bar in back, there’s hope for a seriously quick, and by extension fun, car.
Finally, according to Autocar, the Up GTI will have a revised interior and bumpers, as well 16 inch wheels.
