AUTObiography: MKIIIDave’s 1997 Golf K2

Want your car featured in a VWvortex AUTObiography? Tell us what it means to be a Volkswagen enthusiast, and show us how you and your car demonstrate those ideals! Send this completed form with pictures to sbell@verticalscope.com.

Next up we have forum user David Noone’s 370,000 mile 1997 Golf K2, that proves that going far matters as much as going fast.

How long have you owned this car? Since December 1996.

Is there anything unique about the history of this car? This car has gone back and fourth between me and my father since 1996. It must have been switched back and fourth at least 8 times… and was a daily driver for most of the time.

What drew you to this specific car? I’m not sure, it was a long time ago.

What other cars did you consider? Perhaps the MkIII Jetta.

What was your objective with this car? To keep it well maintained.

What tuning style would you describe this car as? OEM. I attempt to keep it as stock as possible.

Who helped you build this car? Nobody in particular.

What makes your car special? The length of ownership and the reliability of this generation. Many people who remember this car from the late 90s are very surprised its still running and I still own it.

What is your favorite part/feature/function? I prefer the older VW chassis..not that they realistically compare to the new models, but the MKIII generation and back are a ton of fun, even if its only 115hp. I would say I prefer the drivability and fun factor, as well as the reliability.

Who or what inspired the direction of modifications on this car? The OEM/stock look.

What don’t you like about this car? Keeping the rust away… it’s an ongoing project.

What was your biggest obstacle in building this car? Keeping the rust away, and tending to the small issues of a car with higher mileage.

How did you overcome the issue? I think these issues will not go away, they are just part of ownership.

What would you change if you could? Make it rustproof.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with the outcome of this project? 8.

What would you do to the car if money were no object? Repaint Campanella White, 3.6L swap, widen the beetle steelies.

Who has been your biggest critic of this project? Myself.

What do your family and friends say about this car? Most are surprised of the overall condition and the fact that its still running with the original engine. They are also surprised that I have owned it this long.

What is your most memorable/humorous/embarrassing moment with this car? This is hard to answer, as there have been a lot over the years. Probably a speeding ticket in Connecticut around 2002. The officer was very understanding and wrote the ticket for nearly 20 mph slower than I was actually going. I appreciated that.

What is your favorite story about this car? Some clown at a show who was trying to convince me that the ABA engine is a 16V.

Has this car competed in any events? A few between 1997-2000.

What is your favorite place to drive this car? On a highway with nice smooth off-ramps.

What is your ideal day with this car? Cleaning it.

Who gets to drive this car? Mainly myself.

What was your previous project? 1980 Corvette, 1955 Olds Rocket.

What is your next project? 2005 Passat TDI, 1955 Olds Rocket.

What one word best describes your car? Durable.

Any regrets? Tell us about it. No regrets.

Anything else you’d like to share? This car has the original ABA engine and cylinder head. The oil pump is original as well as the heater core. I have always used Mobil 1 and G12 coolant. The original trans went around 310,000 miles due to a bad bearing. The car is on the second head gasket and third clutch.

Watch: The Stig Drives (nearly) Seven Generations of Golf GTI

With Volkswagen announcing “major” updates to the Golf, it seems an appropriate time to look back on what we’ve had so far. And who better to guide us through the rich history of the most popular European car ever made than Ben Collins, the former Stig? Some say he’s never met a GTI he doesn’t love, and that he can’t grow any of his own facial hair. All we know is … Ben Collins is actually a pretty solid presenter. Working his way through seven generations of the GTI (skipping over the Mk6) Collins tells us a little bit about each one and matches each mark to its corresponding facial hair craze. The Mk1 GTI for instance, is light and quick, but can lose traction under hard acceleration (in heavy rain). Despite that, Collins calls the Mk1 a “pure gem.” The Mk4, meanwhile, is a powerful return to form after the perhaps too sensible Mk3. Collins ends in the only way he could, with the Mk7, which accelerates faster than a Lamborghini Countach and is all kinds of wonderful. Watch, ...

Watch: The Story of the Ads that Made VW Big in America

The ads for the original Beetle are almost as famous and well-loved as the Beetle itself. Looking back now it’s easy to forget, though, just how easily things could have wrong. A new short from Dial M Films tracks the history of those early Volkswagen ads that sold America on the people’s car. The story, of course, begins with the visionary agency that made the ads: Doyle Dane Bernach (DDB). As a popular agency for Jewish products, no agency was more aware of the implications of Volkswagen, and no one, it seems, was more skeptical of the brand than DDB. “Remember Those Great Volkswagen Ads?” from Dial M Films on Vimeo . William Bernbach, though, was adament that the firm take the client, probably as a way of attracting other lucrative automotive clients. Saddled with a client that he didn’t want, art director Helmut Krone says in the film that he originally came up with ads that were all wrong. Krone tried to do what other manufacturers did and was intent on selling the Beetle ...

Watch: The Zerouno Cruis’n USA

ItalDesign is drumming up excitement for its new supercar based around the same 5.2-liter Audi V10 that powers the R8. Naturally, it hit the road for a cruise around California last week to celebrate Monterey Car Week. There isn’t much in the way of V10 noise—which is a real shame given the sound it makes—but you do at least get a good look at the car inside and out in this video. With a body made entirely of carbon fiber and designed to be as aerodynamic and light as possible, ItalDesign figures that it will be good for a 0-60 time of just 3.2 seconds. “We put it our best skills into the production of the first car,” said Massimo Bovi, head of pre-series production, when the Zerouno was first unveiled in Geneva earlier this year. “Using some of the finest productions methods and engaging our high-skilled workers.” The car features clever aero tricks gleaned from single-seat racing, like a y-duct up front to improve downforce and turn-in. Available in a number of trim levels, the...
