Andreas Mikkelsen Competes in 100km Foot Race

To the uninitiated, the term motorsport can sound strange. How fit do you have to be to sit in a car all day? Pretty fit, it turns out.

Andreas Mikkelsen and co-driver Anders Jaeger competed in the gruelling Zugspitz Ultratrail Race in Germany this weekend. The race is a 100km hike up country’s tallest mountain, Zugspitz.

Although they didn’t finish the race, due to bad weather, the pair lasted 15 hours and hiked a total of 82 km (nearly 51 miles) before calling it quits. Heavy rains before and during the race meant that the paths taken were muddy and even more difficult than normal, so the team made the decision not to continue, in light of the Polish rally, coming up in less than two weeks.

“When we hit bad weather again at 82km we decided to stop,” Mikkelsen told wrc.com. “Still, I feel 82km isn’t so bad. Of course I wanted to complete the 101 km (62 miles), but 20km off is more than good enough. I think it’s a good achievement to run for 15 hours, it proves we’re in good shape.”

Mikkelsen and Jaeger are currently in third in the WRC driver’s championship, only one point behind the second place Dani Sordo. Mikkelsen finished second at last year’s PZM Rally Poland, and will hope to do even better this year to enter the fight for the championship lead.

PZM 73rd Rally Poland Kicks Off

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday. Today’s super special stage was less than two minutes long, and less than a second separates the top five drivers. Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville tops the charts today, followed closely by Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen. Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala are in fourth and fifth, respectively.
