Volkswagen Place 1-2 at Daytona Rallycross After Both Cars Crash on Saturday

After a disappointing result in Dallas, team Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross (VARX) were looking to get back onto the top of the podium, and despite rocky first race, Tanner Foust and Scott Speed managed to finish first and second in the second round of the Daytona Rallycross.

This weekend’s rallycross was a double header, and unfortunately, the first race didn’t go well. After setting the fastest lap in qualifying, Foust started on pole, but was overtaken by Speed. A well timed joker lap gave Foust the lead back, where he looked comfortable until he hit a pothole, damaging his front suspension and eventually sending spinning, whereupon he was hit by the second place Patrik Sandell (in a Ford Fiesta), ending his race.

Scott Speed, meanwhile, had taken the lead back, and he too looked comfortable there, until his engine caught fire and he was forced out of the race.

After race one, VARX had no points and no cars. The team stayed up all night, wrenching on Foust’s car, and preparing the spare car for Speed. As it turns out, Speed probably should have been using the spare car from the beginning, because he set the fastest time in Sunday’s qualifying.

Unfortunately, since he changed cars, Speed had to start on the back row, while Foust started on pole. Despite some early contact with competitors, Foust’s Beetle stood up to the abuse and finished first, where it had started. Speed, meanwhile, jumped up four spots in the first lap, and eventually finished the race in second, just behind his teammate.

“I really, really love bringing home a win for the guys this weekend,” Foust said.  “Both cars have been getting chewed on all weekend. It’s just epic to come back first and second after all that, and it will be a well-deserved bit of champagne after this.”

With the win, Foust (205 pts) hangs on to his lead in the Driver’s Championship, but race 1 winner, Steve Arpin (201 pts) closes the gap. Speed (178 pts), meanwhile, sits in fourth place, four points behind fourth-place Patrik Sandell (182 pts).

Speed’s next chance to catch up to his teammate will be in two weeks, on July 2-3, when the Red Bull GRC heads to Marine Corps Air Station New River, in North Carolina for another double header.

Macau Gets Messy with 16-Car Pileup

The Macau Grand Prix is always good for an accident or two or 16— you may remember Audi’s race ending crash last year —and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. It didn’t take long for things to get messy on the tight road circuit. On the opening lap of the qualifying race a 16-car pileup caused the race to be suspended. Things kicked off when Daniel Juncadella hit a wall on the exit of Police bend, one of the tightest parts of the already tight circuit. The following car of Raffaele Marciello was able to avoid the carnage, but Laurens Vanthoor, who was in the upside-down Audi that ended the race last year, could not avoid Juncadella and together they blocked up the road pretty much completely. “I couldn’t see him [Juncadella] at first. Then I saw the car standing still,” Vanthoor told Motorsport. “I tried to brake but it was just understeering and I couldn’t do anything. There’s room for one car there and you’re blind.” Fourteen more cars would eventually crash into the corner c

The First of its Kind: Integrated Engineering Releases Highly-Anticipated IE450T MK6 Golf R Turbo Kit

After two long years of development, the team at Integrated Engineering has finally announced the release of their IE450T kit for the MK6 Golf R. With their turbo kit bolted on right out of the box, the sport AWD hatch is transformed into a 450bhp monster, with hardly any noticeable increase in spool time. In fact, 435 ft-lbs of torque are achieved at all four wheels, at a mere 3300rpm! By now you are probably asking yourself how this is even possible on a 2.0L engine that made nearly half that power from the factory. By employing true twin-scroll technology into the cast turbo manifold and pairing it with a state-of-the-art BorgWarner EFR turbocharger, IE was able to keep spool time at a minimum and bring the fastest-spooling big turbo setup to the market. “We wanted to offer a kit that would dramatically increase the power output without making the car lose its amazing street-friendly drivability,” mentioned one of the IE engineers. We are told the IE450T leaves the car driving jus
