Speaking at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, VW’s global sales and marketing boss Jurgen Stackmann told Autocar that a range of 180 to 280 miles is the tipping point for sales of the Group’s coming range of electric vehicles.
At that point, so-called range anxiety will go away, making electric vehicles much more attractive. Stackmann also predicts that the cost of electric vehicles will decrease, priming them to challenge gas and diesel powered family cars.
To reach its range goals, Stackmann told Autocar, VW would need a 60kWh battery. With recent rumors that VW will be building battery factories for its fleet of electric cars, an economy of scales could make EVs affordable enough for the mass market.
Matthias Muller predicted at VW’s annual general meeting, that in ten years, Volkswagen would be selling as many as 3 million electric vehicles, which would make up about a quarter of sales. Stackmann, meanwhile, predicts that electric sales could rise to as much as 45%, about the same as today’s diesel sales.
“Diesel will remain a strong part of the offering, particularly for long-distance driving,” Stackmann told Autocar. “But there could be the case of a market segment where we only have petrol and electric and no diesel.”
