Although deliveries at the Volkswagen brand were down again this month, year-over-year, they have again improved over last month’s figures. The Volkswagen Group’s numbers meanwhile, are up again overall.
The Volkswagen brand sold 495,900 in May of this year and 2,432,200 between January and May. Both numbers are down (-0.7% and -1.7%) as compared to last year, but it’s an improvement over last month, when brand sales were down 3.9% for the month and 2% for the first quarter.
The numbers aren’t a staggering improvement, but continue the trend of improvement since the diesel crisis.
Despite the drop from the Volkswagen brand, the single biggest seller in the Group, VAG still managed to increase sales in May and the year so far.
Bolstered by increasing sales figures from all the brands (except VW) worldwide VAG sales rose by 1.6% in May, and 0.8% in the first five months of the year.
As usual, the brands with the biggest increases in sales were Scania, Audi, Porsche, and Skoda (+6.6%, +5.3%, +4.9%, and +4.6% Jan-May), while SEAT and MAN (+0.2%, and +1.5% Jan-May) both saw only modest increases in sales. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles was another brand that saw big improvements with +5.7% between January and May.
The regions that saw most growth were also the usual suspects: Europe and Asia. Interestingly, though, Russian sales rose steeply in May, with 7.5% more vehicles sold there last month than in the previous year. This is a big change for a market that had been shrinking for a few months. Sales in North and South America continue to flag.
