PZM 73rd Rally Poland Kicks Off

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday. Today’s super special stage was less than two minutes long, and less than a second separates the top five drivers. Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville tops the charts today, followed closely by Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen. Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala are in fourth and fifth, respectively. Expect Ogier to climb the rankings, though. Not only did he win the rally last year, he has won every year since 2013. And with rain expected on Friday, Ogier’s chances are even better. “If it’s a bit wet then I hope I can make some good times,” said Ogier earlier today. “The best would be some good rain during the night so it’s a damp surface and then not too bad weather during the day so specators can enjoy the show without being too wet.” If it is dry, though, speed is on ...

You can't scam VW by buying a dirty diesel now and still get full payout

VW Thinks it has a Fix for its 3.0L Diesels

Volkswagen could avoid another round of costly buybacks thanks to a fix that they say they’ve found for their 3.0L TDI engine. VW lawyer Robert Giuffra said at a hearing today that the fix VW thinks it has found is neither complicated nor will it negatively affect performance, reports Automotive News. The fix is still being tested to determine its durability, but if it passes, VW could solve this issue with a recall, potentially saving the company billions. The 3.0L diesel was not part of the settlement that VW and government officials agreed to earlier this week, since it did not use the cheat device used on the 2.0L TDI engines. The 3.0L diesel, found in the Touareg, the Audi Q7 and more, instead used an undeclared auxiliary emissions-control device. Justice Department lawyer, Joshua Van Eaton, said at a hearing today that talks and tests were being conducted to decide how best to proceed with the car and SUVs fitted with the 3.0L TDI. US District Judge Charles Breyer, meanwhile,...

Coming to America: the Rabbit GTI

As some of you may know, Independence Day is on Monday, and to celebrate birth of these United States we thought we’d tell the story of another powerful agent of democracy: the Golf GTI. Just like the forefathers, the Golf GTI gave power to the people and, little known fact, it was Benjamin Franklin’s love of golf that inspired the Volkswagen’s name. Interestingly, the dizzying success of the Golf GTI (which came to us nearly 10 years after it was introduced in Europe) has a great deal to do with the dismal failure of Volkswagen of America’s first American factory: Volkswagen Westmoreland Assembly. Although Volkswagen had a number of models for sale in the ‘60s and ’70s, the car that supported the brand was the Beetle. With the inevitable arrival of the ‘70s, Beetle sales were struggling. By 1974, Volkswagen were in a full on financial crisis. The brand needed a new car to replace the Beetle and compete with water-cooled economy cars from other manufacturers. Enter the Golf. Diametr...

AUTObiography: The Fiat Verde Chiaro Mk4 R32

Want your car featured in a VWvortex AUTObiography? Tell us what it means to be a Volkswagen enthusiast, and show us how you and your car demonstrate those ideals!  Send this completed form with pictures  to  sbell@verticalscope.com . Today we’re featuring forum-mod aar0n ‘s 2004 Golf R32. This Fiat Verde Chiaro R32 was only ever supposed to be a daily driver, but one thing led to another, and now this is one of the more comprehensively modified cars we’ve featured since the glorious return of AUTObiography. How long have you owned this car? 5 years and change. I bought the R32 in February 2011 after selling my MK4 Jetta Wolfsburg—which I had owned for 7 years—about 2 months before. Is there anything unique about the history of this car? Not in particular, though Tornado Red R32s had fairly low production numbers. I found it locally on Long Island and it had 4 previous owners and 91k miles, but the Carfax was clean and everything checked out. Like with all Tornado R...

Stackmann Says Volkswagen EVs Need 180-280 Mile Range

Speaking at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, VW’s global sales and marketing boss Jurgen  Stackmann told Autocar that a range of 180 to 280 miles is the tipping point for sales of the Group’s coming range of electric vehicles. At that point, so-called range anxiety will go away, making electric vehicles much more attractive. Stackmann also predicts that the cost of electric vehicles will decrease, priming them to challenge gas and diesel powered family cars. To reach its range goals, Stackmann told Autocar, VW would need a 60kWh battery. With recent rumors that VW will be building battery factories for its fleet of electric cars , an economy of scales could make EVs affordable enough for the mass market. Matthias Muller predicted at VW’s annual general meeting, that in ten years, Volkswagen would be selling as many as 3 million electric vehicles, which would make up about a quarter of sales. Stackmann, meanwhile, predicts that electric sales could rise to as much as ...

Volkswagen Unveils the New Touareg Executive Edition

The Touareg just got fancier, as Volkswagen has announced a new version with quilted leather seats and a new paint color named after wine. The new Touareg Executive Edition, as it’s called, is being described as “first class, elegant, [and] exclusive.” Its new color, called Malbec Red, named after the French red wine grape variety, is exclusively available on the Executive Edition and pairs nicely with the black 20-inch Mallory alloys. To give you shade from the sun that keeps shining on you, the windows are tinted, and the Touareg Executive Edition comes with smoked, cherry red rear lights. Inside the Executive Edition comes with  black Nappa leather, diamond quilted seats, whose stitching comes in a contrasting “tobacco” color. Unlike the smoldering color, your back will be cool thanks to seat ventilation and heating. To complete the look, there are numerous wooden decorative inlays, illuminated stainless steel door sill panels, and “Executive Edition” badges. Prices start ...

Volkswagen Unveils Basketball Net that Moves to Unused Parking Spots

Volkswagen Belgium has just started a new ad campaign focused on urban areas. Their new Volksparking initiative starts with a mobile basketball net that moves along the back wall of a parking lot. The net starts in a parking spot, where people can play a game of basketball in a parking spot. When that spot gets filled by a car, the net automatically moves to the next available spot. “Together with the MIT Institute of Technology in Massachusetts, Volkswagen was looking for new ways to better use existing parking spaces,” says Jean-Marc Ponteville of Volkswagen Belgium. “Because no matter how coveted [free parking spaces] are, if there is no car, they are virtually useless.” Volkswagen’s campaign is focused on turning every space in Belgium’s tightly packed cities into multipurpose spaces that everyone can use. “In this way,” says Ponteville, “we can maximize and make the best use of our cities. Volksparking is a great start. It’s our first project, but one that gives a second life...

Find of the Day: 1977 EA489 Hormiga

Today’s find of the day is another delightfully strange VW that some consider to be the rarest of all VWs: the Basistransporter, or Hormiga, as the Mexicans call it. This boxy work truck may look like the Transporter, but unlike the Type 2s of the day, this has its air-cooled flat four up front driving the front wheels. The Hormiga was developed to compete with cheap GM and Ford trucks that were being sold in developing markets. About 2,600 of these were produced as knock-down kits in Germany between 1975 and 1979, and 3,600 were made in Mexico between 1977 and 1979. The Hormiga is endowed with a 1600cc engine that sits on a simple ladder-frame, and it has torsion bars up front and a beam axle at the back. The beauty of the EA489 is its simplicity. The body has no curves, nor do the windows, and the mechanicals are all from the VW parts bin, so repairs are easy. And that’s why these things are still on the road in Mexico. This example, for sale on The Samba , is in Arizona right...

Watch a Bunch of GTIs Play on the Nurburgring

A few months ago, before Worthersee, VW invited GTI owners to meet them at the Nurburgring to get together and learn the track from some pro drivers. This beautifully shot video is the result from earlier this month, when the hot hatch that begat them all took over and tamed the green hell. It’s been a tumultuous day in the world of VW, so take this chance to enjoy some uncomplicated VW love. The best hot hatch in the world (save maybe for the R), one of the best tracks in the world, and the exquisite envy of knowing you weren’t there. Here’s How Much You Can Expect from Your TDI Buyback

Earlier today Volkswagen, the FTC, the EPA, and other government agencies announced that they’d agreed on a settlemen t, the sum total of which could cost VW nearly $15 billion. This morning it was indicated that Volkswagen would be paying between $12,000 and $44,000 (accounting for Audis) to TDI owners based on a number of factors. Now we know what the buyback values are likely to be car-by-car. The values are published in the full case filings published today at ftc.gov . The values are based on what the cars were worth before September 2015, when the scandal broke. The values quoted below could change, however, if your car has higher or lower than standard mileage when you sell your car back. If you choose to sell your car, you will get the value of your car, as laid out below, plus a cash payment—also listed beside your vehicle in column 2 of the chart, labeled “Approved Emissions Modification.” If, however, a fix is possible and you opt for it, you will get it free of charge as ...

Golf GTI Clubsport Drives Up the Goodwood Hill Climb

There’s no arguing with the fact that the Golf GTI Clubsport S is an extremely quick car. It has set the FWD lap record at the Nurburgring and wowed reviewers with its remarkable pace, but it’s never publicly been seen anywhere but on the so-called “green hell.” Fortunately, there’s the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the world’s best cars go, so naturally the Clubsport S had to be there. Not only that, but the GTI Clubsport S ran up the 1.1 mile hill climb course with Jurgen Stackmann, board of management member for sales and marketing, at the wheel. With only 400 Clubsports S slated for production, this was a great opportunity to win over Brits. Sadly, fewer than 150 of them will get to own the conqueror of the “green hell,” as only that many right-hand drive models are going there. Joining the Clubsport S at Goodwood were two race cars. The first was a Mk1 GTI race car, while the second was a Volkswagen Motorsport Polo R WRC, which is likely already in Poland—blame UKIP—for ...

Volkswagen Agrees to Nearly $15 Billion 2.0L TDI Settlement

The department of Justice and Volkswagen today announced that they have agreed to a settlement that could amount to up to $14.7 billion. The settlement will be presented to Judge Charles R. Breyer who will decide on whether or not to approve the agreement in the coming months. The agreement includes a maximum of $10.033 billion for buybacks for the 475,000 2.0L diesels from model years 2009-2015 in use in the USA. It also includes a $2.7 billion environmental trust and an investment of $2 billion in brand-neutral zero emissions vehicle initiatives. Volkswagen will offer to buy back TDI vehicles at their pre-September-2015 (when the scandal broke) values and will, according to an autonews.com report , also offer to pay between $5,000 and $10,000 to owners. After/if the agreement gets preliminary then final approval from Judge Breyer—which isn’t expected to happen until October—the buybacks will begin. If Volkswagen can come up with a way to repair the vehicles that is approved by reg...

Watch the Bugatti Chiron Go Up the Hill at Goodwood

By now we know just about everything there is to know about Bugatti’s latest uber-car, the Chiron. We know what it looks like (better than the Veyron), what it sounds like (a little dirty), how much power it has (1,500 hp), and any number of other things. What we didn’t know, not until this weekend anyway, is what it looked like going up the hill climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Well, wonder no more, because the fine people over there in Goodwood were kind enough to film the whole thing. The Chiron is surprisingly quick looking on the climb. The front end, though, pitches up a surprising amount on acceleration. The front tires look like they might leave the tarmac, but of course don’t. Take a look at the video above and enjoy. VW Might Choose China as Site of Battery Plant

Volkswagen might be looking to China as the site of their new, rumored battery plant. Sources say that the company could invest billions in one or more plants in the country, which is currently pushing electromobility. There were rumors earlier this year that VW would investing nearly $11 billion into a battery factory, and with CEO Matthias Müller’s assertion that the Group would sell up to 3 million electric vehicles a year by 2025, investment in battery technology seems like all but a foregone conclusion. On top of that, as it stands, Europe only currently has a battery cell capacity of 27 gigawatt hours for the entire automotive industry. Volkswagen estimates that it will need 150 GWh to power its fleet. A source close to senior management tells Automotive News that getting up to that number would require around 10 factories, each of which costs roughly $2 billion, for a total of about $20 billion. As a result, Volkswagen will be looking for some help covering the costs. Enter ...

Skoda Considering North American Launch, Keeps Trademarking Names

Skoda thinks that the North American market has potential and the brand is busy trademarking its nameplates here to make sure it is ready for what the future holds.  Volkswagen-owned Skoda has now trademarked 12 different nameplates with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) since May 31, with the latest batch of names including Spaceback, Rapid, Fabia and H-Tec. The brand has also begun protecting its names with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. Companies will often trademark names just to protect their assets, even if it’s in another country. But we spoke to Skoda representatives and they admit that the North American market is attractive. “ŠKODA is continuously analyzing the situation on a number of markets and regions, which in the long term might potentially be attractive for the brand,” said Tomas Kubik from Skoda corporate communications. “North America including the U.S. market is one of those regions. However, to date, no dec...

Eurokracy: The Late Models

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Get your poutine forks ready, cause we’re back in Montreal for our second gallery from Eurokracy 2016. This time around we’re featuring later model VWs and Audis with some other brands sprinkled in for good measure. The over arching theme at this year’s show was stance, with lowered ride heights and big, shiny wheels well represented. There’s something a bit more European about these builds that I can’t quite put my finger on, though. Maybe it’s the bright colors? Maybe it’s just a Quebec stereotype. At any rate, as with last week, some weirdness did manage to sneak in with cars like the Mad-Maxian Passat wagon and the shortened Audi A3(?). Like last week these pictures were taken by the multi-talented Jamie Orr. Take a look through our gallery and let us know what you like best. Volkswagen Announce Filter that Reduces Particulate Emissions by 90% at AGM

Volkswagen’s annual general meeting was full of information and scrutiny, because of diesel-gate and the Group’s new direction. As a result, one item was overshadowed and that was CEO Matthias Muller’s announcement that the Group would be installing a soot-reducing filter to some of its gas engines. The first vehicles to receive the filter will be the 1.4L TSI version of the VW Tiguan and the 2.0L TFSI in the Audi A5, starting mid-2017. “This [initiative] will reduce particulate emissions by up to 90%,” said Muller at the AGM. “Up to 7 million Volkswagen vehicles could  be equipped with this technology each year by 2022.” Volkswagen is familiar with the technology, because particle filters have been mandatory on diesel vehicles in Europe since 2009. They work by trapping soot in the exhaust system, which is then burned off by the high temperatures therein. Although gasoline engines are much cleaner than diesel engines, direct injection engines are dirtier than their port-inject...

Volkswagen Wins “Most Innovative Brand of 2016” Award from Plus X

The Tiguan, the Touran, the Phideon, the T-Cross Breeze, and the Budd-e all won innovation awards last night at the “Plus X Night 2026.” On top of that, Volkswagen were also named the Most Innovative Brand of 2016 and the Best Design Brand of the year. Plus X is an association that awards consumer products and brands, a bit like J.D. Power, and every year they host an awards ceremony to honor the top brands. Volkswagen’s Head of Design, Klaus Bischoff, was on hand last night, getting his exercise in as he walked to the podium a number of times to pick up his awards, or quality seals as Plus X calls them. Among the many seals bestowed on the brand’s vehicles, were “Product of the Year” seals, given to the Touran, the Tiguan, the Phideon, and the T-Cross Breeze. “Innovation is not about any one aspect, innovation is a whole concept made up of efficiency, reliability and convenience,” wrote the Plus X jury of Volkswagen. “And innovation is particularly innovative when everyone can affo...

VW Continues to Celebrate GTI’s 40th Anniversary at Goodwood

Representatives from Europe’s biggest automaker have left the continent for the now-non-European soil of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and they’re celebrating the 40 th anniversary of the best hot hatch of them all, the Golf GTI. Fresh off their celebration on the banks of lake Wörthersee, VW is heading to, what is perhaps the biggest automotive festival in the world with a selection of GTIs. With them, they’re bringing a Mk1 GTI race car, the Nurburgring FWD lap record holding Golf GTI Clubsport S, and the WRC leading Polo R WRC. The Mk1 and the Polo R will both be going up the Lord March’s now legendary driveway (read: the hill climb course) with Strietzel Stuck and Jari-Matti Latvala at the wheel. Celebrate 65 Years of the Volkswagen Bus and 120 of ABT with this Modified T6

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Last year, the so very versatile Volkswagen Bus or Camper, or whatever you call it, celebrated its 65 th birthday. But even older than this Volkswagen transporter is ABT Sportsline. After all, this renowned company from Bavaria can look back on 120 years of “traditional innovation“. And ABT has also done a lot for more mobility over the past few decades. “The Volkswagen Bus has long since been one of our companions, if you will – both as a team bus in motorsports and in terms of enhancement,“ says Hans-Jürgen Abt. For the ABT Sportsline CEO, particularly the new T6 is more than just a transporter for craftsmen and families. The latest make is a big-time “lifestyle” vehicle and unusual, versatile and agile – even more so after having been “ABT-powered-up”. The anniversary edition has 235 hp (173 kW), up from 204 hp (150 kW), and the bi-turbo 2l engine 490 Nm. So it can take a huge load, too! The same applies to the “normal” 2.0 TDI, now with ...

VW Will Reportedly Give TDI Owners Up to $7,000

With Volkswagen, regulators, and owners expected to present a diesel scandal settlement agreement to US District Judge Charles Breyer on June 28, rumors are already swirling about what the content of the deal will be. Bloomberg today is reporting that Volkswagen will provide cash payments of $1,000 to $7,000 to TDI owners and will fund a grant to offset air pollution. As we reported earlier this week , the rumored agreement will amount to more than $10 billion for Volkswagen, and the amount actually paid out to the owners of the 482,000 diesel cars will depend on age and other factors, says Bloomberg’s report. Regulators are said to be looking at the Diesel Emissions Reductions Act (DERA) grant as a model for how to spend the remediation fund that Volkswagen is paying to government regulators. DERA funded projects like retrofitting older diesel buses and replacing aging fleets of diesel trucks. Just how much money goes into that fund will depend on a complex calculus that will tak...
