The ‘80s were a special time. Years of VW making cheap, affordable cars meant that there was a glut of air-cooled VWs just lying around and a taste for hair metal meant that there were few limits on the definition of taste.
So why not upholster your Microbus in genuine Cadillac velour, paint it in a color called “Candy Brandy Wine,” and add a painting of Dorothy traveling up the yellow brick road for good measure?
I guess it has some pretty cool designs running down its side that evoke the height of van culture, but that’s a pretty dubious claim to goodness.
It also has exhaust dumps ahead of the rear wheels, which means there’s some fancy footwork going on with the muffler routing that some might call unnecessary.
Perhaps most alarmingly, though, it has a wheelie bar. I know that it’s there to keep you from falling over, but it only really draws attention to how unstable this car really looks. It’s hardly surprising that an 1,835 cc VW flat four (hooked up to a four-speed) can make the front wheels pop up.
