Ratty Rescue: Silver Scirocco S

[See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com]

We’ve all had this happen: we come across a car that needs attention and we think “If only I had the time/money/understanding spouse, I’d take that ride in and fix it all up.” You see these cars and you can hear Sarah McLachlan’s “In the arms of an angel…” playing softly in the distance. This car needs love. It needs someone to take it in, and, well, save it. These pitiful piles of potential inspired this latest series, Ratty Rescues. These forlorn vehicles need saving, and who better to do that than our faithful VWVortex members.

Our first car in need of a rescue is a 1981 Volkswagen Scirocco S. The MKI Scirocco was known for many things. It was the spiritual successor to the Karmann Ghia. Much like its air-cooled uncle, the ‘Rocco features Italian styling, German construction by Karmann in Osnabruck, and it has a sexy body mounted on the chassis shared with a more plebeian sibling.

The Scirocco ushered in Volkswagen’s 180-degree business shift: front engined, front wheel drive cars. While it wasn’t the fastest car available (it premiered in 1974 when all manufacturers were struggling to meet gas consumption and emission requirements), it was a lively handling little car. The tight and low slung body definitely got attention. Overall, the Scirocco is an important model in Volkswagen’s history that is becoming more and rarer every day. This ’81 needs saving.

What are you getting into with this little fastback? A solid shell, an allegedly running engine, and a bunch of parts. The first thing you may notice is the mold. It covers the exterior and appears to be on the inside. Some time with an ozone machine and some scrubbing will clear all that up. The interior looks complete, with just a few bits and pieces, like window cranks, needed. There’s some rust, but it appears to be minimal for a 35+ year old car. All in all, it’s a complete car with no major part sourcing needed. Did we mention it runs?

So just like those ASPCA commercials showing sad-eyed dogs and cats, here’s your opportunity to rescue a neglected little future family member. The car is in southern New Jersey, about 15 minutes from Philadelphia. The seller is asking $2800.

Watch: The Story of the Ads that Made VW Big in America

The ads for the original Beetle are almost as famous and well-loved as the Beetle itself. Looking back now it’s easy to forget, though, just how easily things could have wrong. A new short from Dial M Films tracks the history of those early Volkswagen ads that sold America on the people’s car. The story, of course, begins with the visionary agency that made the ads: Doyle Dane Bernach (DDB). As a popular agency for Jewish products, no agency was more aware of the implications of Volkswagen, and no one, it seems, was more skeptical of the brand than DDB. “Remember Those Great Volkswagen Ads?” from Dial M Films on Vimeo . William Bernbach, though, was adament that the firm take the client, probably as a way of attracting other lucrative automotive clients. Saddled with a client that he didn’t want, art director Helmut Krone says in the film that he originally came up with ads that were all wrong. Krone tried to do what other manufacturers did and was intent on selling the Beetle ...

Watch: The Stig Drives (nearly) Seven Generations of Golf GTI

With Volkswagen announcing “major” updates to the Golf, it seems an appropriate time to look back on what we’ve had so far. And who better to guide us through the rich history of the most popular European car ever made than Ben Collins, the former Stig? Some say he’s never met a GTI he doesn’t love, and that he can’t grow any of his own facial hair. All we know is … Ben Collins is actually a pretty solid presenter. Working his way through seven generations of the GTI (skipping over the Mk6) Collins tells us a little bit about each one and matches each mark to its corresponding facial hair craze. The Mk1 GTI for instance, is light and quick, but can lose traction under hard acceleration (in heavy rain). Despite that, Collins calls the Mk1 a “pure gem.” The Mk4, meanwhile, is a powerful return to form after the perhaps too sensible Mk3. Collins ends in the only way he could, with the Mk7, which accelerates faster than a Lamborghini Countach and is all kinds of wonderful. Watch, ...
