Poor headlights prevented the new Volkswagen Atlas from qualifying for a coveted Top Safety Pick+ award.
The new SUV from Volkswagen did earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award, after receiving good ratings in all five crash-worthiness tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. The Atlas also has an available front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating. In the 12-mph IIHS track test, the Atlas avoided a collision, while in the 25-mph test, the impact speed was reduced by 17 mph.
Unfortunately for the Volkswagen Atlas, its available headlights are rated marginal and poor. In order to qualify for an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must have good or acceptable headlights.
