A flaw in the computer that controls the fuel pump in 2009 to 2016 Volkswagen Passats and CCs is leading to the recall of 280,000 vehicles in America.
The recall covers four-cylinder gas-powered cars that can stall due to a fault that stops the flow of gasoline to the engine.
The computer controlling the fuel pump can lose power causing the pump to turn off when the car is running, leading the car to stall. Alternately, the fuel pump can also continue running when the car is off.
The problem came to light after Chinese authorities started a recall last year. That is what kicked off this recall, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Volkswagen says it will start notifying owners in October about the problem and will send a second letter later when a replacement pump is available.
Despite the recall, VW says it has had no reports of crashes or injuries related to this fault.
