Porsche Involved in Sunglass Scandal

In a scandal no media outlets have been quick to call glare-gate, Porsche Cars North America has agreed to pay the cost of one pair of sunglasses for certain owners of its vehicles.

Owners and lessees of Porsches made between 2007 and 2016 with Cognac, Luxor Beige, Natural Brown, Platinum Grey or Sand Beige interiors are included in the class action lawsuit.

The suit alleges that the dashes of cars with the above mentioned interior colors reflected excessively on the on the windshield making it hard to see—or hurting the eyes maybe? Legalese isn’t my forte, but the result is that rather than go to the trouble of hashing this out in court, Porsche has voluntarily agreed to give class members up to $175 for a pair of sunglasses.

You wouldn’t have thought that Porsche owners needed any help buying glasses, but I suppose that’s beside the point.

For that price, you should be able to get a pretty nice pair of shades, but they won’t be from Porsche Design, as the site is currently “temporarily sold out” of all its sunglasses. You could try to order them from Canada, though, where they would cost you the princely sum of up to $730 (and no less than $485), which—even with the way the exchange rate looks these days—won’t get you a pair.

Although this whole suit sounds a little ridiculous, excessive glare could be a safety issue (as the person who launched the suit claimed) if it prevents you from seeing. Porsche, though, counters that the glare hasn’t caused any injuries or even any measurable loss to its drivers, none of whom have stopped driving their cars because of this issue.

Macau Gets Messy with 16-Car Pileup

The Macau Grand Prix is always good for an accident or two or 16— you may remember Audi’s race ending crash last year —and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. It didn’t take long for things to get messy on the tight road circuit. On the opening lap of the qualifying race a 16-car pileup caused the race to be suspended. Things kicked off when Daniel Juncadella hit a wall on the exit of Police bend, one of the tightest parts of the already tight circuit. The following car of Raffaele Marciello was able to avoid the carnage, but Laurens Vanthoor, who was in the upside-down Audi that ended the race last year, could not avoid Juncadella and together they blocked up the road pretty much completely. “I couldn’t see him [Juncadella] at first. Then I saw the car standing still,” Vanthoor told Motorsport. “I tried to brake but it was just understeering and I couldn’t do anything.
