VW Off to a Perfect Start in Global Rallycross

A new track and scoring system couldn’t keep Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross off the top two spots of the podium this weekend, as Scott Speed and Tanner Foust were once again the best in the opening weekend of the 2017 season of the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship.

For Speed, the weekend was nearly perfect. With a win in the final, as well as two heat wins, and a semifinal win, it was an ideal start for the defending double champion. This weekend was also his 12^th win in GRC, a record in the series.

“Having an almost perfect weekend like this is obviously a great way to start the season,” said Speed. “Lots of hard work made this possible, so I’ve got to give a shoutout to everyone at Andretti and Volkswagen who made this result possible.”

Foust, meanwhile, celebrates a somewhat more frustrating, though no less distinguished record of his own. His second place finish means that he has climbed the podium 25 times in his career, more than anyone in GRC.

Foust’s second-place finish also marks the first VARX 1-2 of the season, something the team managed three times last season. That despite this being the GRC’s first time on the Memphis track.

“It really is a tricky track. The first corner is so fast—when you dive in there, you wobble your way up the banking there,” said Foust after the race. “Scott put up an amazing fight, and all you can do is go on those heels and game on.”

The final race itself was interrupted by a crash on the first lap involving Subaru’s Patrik Sandell, which caused a red flag. On the restart, Speed held onto the lead and Foust was hot on his heels to the checkered flag, when less than a second separated them.

After the race, Speed leads the championship with 79 points, though a new points system means that Foust is only five points back with 74. They lead Ford’s Steve Arpin and Honda’s Mitchell DeJong who both have 64 points.

The teams are headed to Kentucky next, for the Lousiville rallycross on May 21.

PZM 73rd Rally Poland Kicks Off

The WRC is in Poland and after only one stage there are three Volkswagens in the top five. Today’s special stage at the Mikolajki Arena is the first stage, but the rally doesn’t begin in earnest until Friday. Today’s super special stage was less than two minutes long, and less than a second separates the top five drivers. Hyundai Motorsport’s Thierry Neuville tops the charts today, followed closely by Volkswagen’s Andreas Mikkelsen. Sebastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala are in fourth and fifth, respectively.
