Report: VW Kills 10-Speed DSG Project

Volkswagen has put the kibosh on its 10-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. The project developing the many geared transmission has been ended, according to a report from Automotive News.

“Two months ago, I had the prototype crushed,” Friedrich Eichler, VW’s head of powertrains told the outlet at the Vienna Motor Symposium, where it was first announced in 2013.

The transmission was announced the same year as Ford and Chevrolet announced that they would be working together on a 10-speed transmission that can now be found in the Camaro ZL1.

With a kind of super overdrive and “finely graduated” steps between 3^rd and 9^th gears, VW engineers claimed that the transmission could improve speed and efficiency. Keeping the size and the weight of the car down, though, meant that the project was still a tricky one.

According to Eichler, the gearbox reflects the “bigger is“ better attitude that defined pre-scandal VW, and that is now changing.

Although the culture is now changing, Eichler wouldn’t say that the project would never come back. “Of course, I saved all the data,” he said.

Event Report: Southern Worthersee 2015

There’s been much ado about this year’s SoWo since this past Saturday night, when Instagram, Facebook and other Social Media channels exploded with images and commentary focusing on the event’s bad eggs. But first, let’s chat a bit about the event itself. Our journey started early Thursday morning as part of the Orchid Euro/Coolwater cruise to the event. What should have taken about 12-13 hours ended up taking much more, as we stopped to help any Volkswagen that needed our assistance. And while the extended commute time wasn’t ideal, it proved to highlight the ‘no person left behind’ spirit of the Volkswagen community- arguably one of the scene’s best qualities.
